Brooke’s Secret Escape to Chicago

Brooke’s Secret Escape

A Night That Changes Everything

SCENE 1 — THE HOUSE FALLS SILENT

It is late at night. The house has finally fallen quiet. Bethany and Larry are fast asleep, unaware that Brooke is still awake, sitting on the edge of her bed and staring into the darkness.

Her mind is overwhelmed. Isaiah’s betrayal keeps replaying in her head — every memory, every promise, every moment she once believed was real now feels completely different.

Brooke slowly wipes the tears from her face and looks toward the hallway. She knows she has to make a decision.

Quietly, she stands up and begins packing — clothes, a few personal belongings, everything she thinks she might need for a few days away.

She pauses when she hears a noise outside her room.

— she freezes —

After a few seconds, everything goes silent again. She continues packing. This isn’t just a trip — she is running from the pressure, the heartbreak, and the arguments that have become impossible to handle.

SCENE 2 — BROOKE MAKES THE CALL

Brooke carefully carries her bags downstairs, moving slowly so she won’t wake Bethany or Larry. One by one, she loads them into the trunk of her Nissan sedan.

She closes the trunk halfway and pulls out her phone. There is only one person she wants to talk to — Destiny.

The phone rings. After a few rings, Destiny answers.

BROOKE

Destiny, I’m sorry for calling you this late, but I honestly don’t know who else I can talk to right now. Everything with Isaiah has completely fallen apart, and I feel completely lost.

Destiny immediately realizes something is wrong.

DESTINY

Brooke, you sound completely different right now. I can hear something is really bothering you. Tell me what happened, because whatever you’re going through, you don’t have to handle it alone tonight.

Brooke takes a deep breath. Her voice trembles.

BROOKE

Isaiah betrayed me, Destiny. I still can’t understand how someone I trusted so much could hurt me like this. I feel embarrassed, heartbroken, and honestly too exhausted to keep pretending everything is fine.

— Destiny goes quiet for a moment —

DESTINY

Brooke, if you’re feeling this overwhelmed, what are you planning to do now? You disappeared emotionally tonight, and I’m worried you’re about to make a decision without thinking about what happens afterward.

Brooke looks back at the house. Her eyes fill with tears again.

SCENE 3 — BROOKE REVEALS HER PLAN

Brooke lowers her voice. She knows that saying it out loud will make everything real.

BROOKE

I don’t want to go to university anymore, Destiny. Mom and Dad keep forcing me to go even though I’m already struggling emotionally, and after everything Isaiah did, I don’t feel like I can pretend everything is normal.

Destiny sighs. She can tell Brooke is hurting.

DESTINY

I understand that you’re hurting because of Isaiah, but leaving everything behind tonight isn’t something you should decide while you’re this emotional. If you come here, at least know you’ll have someone who will listen.

Brooke looks toward the packed car. Her decision has already been made.

BROOKE

I’m not trying to disappear forever, Destiny. I just need somewhere I can breathe without everyone telling me what I’m supposed to do. I want to come to Chicago for a few days and clear my head.

Destiny immediately softens.

DESTINY

Brooke, you know you can come here whenever you need to. You don’t have to ask me for permission to come to Chicago — if you need somewhere safe and someone who will listen, my door will always be open.

Brooke closes her eyes. For the first time that night, she feels slightly relieved.

SCENE 4 — THE FINAL GOODBYE

Brooke looks at the clock. It’s getting later. She knows she can’t stay much longer.

BROOKE

Thank you, Destiny. I’m going to leave now, and if everything goes according to plan, I should reach Chicago sometime in the morning. I just need you to understand why I’m doing this.

Destiny’s voice becomes concerned.

DESTINY

Please be careful on the road, Brooke, and don’t drive recklessly just because you’re upset. Call me if anything happens, keep your phone charged, and remember that you have someone waiting for you when you finally arrive.

Brooke nods even though Destiny can’t see her. She opens the driver’s door, then looks back at her house one last time. For a moment, she wonders whether she should go back inside. But then she remembers everything that happened, and steps into the car.

BROOKE

I’ll be careful, Destiny. I’m leaving now, and I’ll call you when I get there. I don’t know what tomorrow will look like, but tonight I just need to get away and figure out what I’m going to do with my life.

DESTINY

Just focus on getting there safely, Brooke. Forget the arguments, the pressure, and everything else for tonight. When you arrive, we’ll sit down, talk about everything, and figure out your next step together.

BROOKE

Okay, Destiny. Thank you for being there when I needed someone the most. I’m going to hang up now because I need to start driving before I lose my courage.

The call ends. Brooke places her phone beside her, starts the engine, and — without looking back again — drives away into the darkness.

SCENE 5 — MORNING CHANGES EVERYTHING

Several hours later, morning light slowly enters the house. Larry wakes up and gets ready for the day. Bethany is already thinking about breakfast. Neither of them knows that Brooke has been gone for hours.

Bethany walks toward Brooke’s room, expecting to find her daughter sleeping. She knocks gently.

— no answer —

BETHANY

Brooke, sweetheart, breakfast is ready. You need to get up because Larry and I have been waiting for you, and I don’t want you spending another morning locked inside your room.

— still nothing —

Bethany slowly opens the door. Her expression immediately changes. The room is empty. The bed is untouched. Brooke is nowhere to be seen.

BETHANY

Larry, something is wrong. Brooke isn’t in her room, and I can’t find her anywhere. Her bed is empty, some of her things are missing, and I have a terrible feeling that she left the house.

Larry rushes toward the doorway.

LARRY

What do you mean she left? She wouldn’t just disappear without telling us, especially after everything that happened yesterday. Did you check downstairs, the bathroom, the kitchen, or anywhere else she could have gone?

Bethany shakes her head, then suddenly remembers the driveway. They both hurry outside. Brooke’s Nissan sedan is gone. Bethany stares at the empty space where the car had been parked. Her face goes pale.

BETHANY

Her car is gone too, Larry. She didn’t just leave her room; she took the car and apparently packed her things. Why would she leave without saying anything to either of us?

Larry immediately pulls out his phone and calls Brooke. It rings, then the call ends. He tries again. This time, the message is clear — her phone is switched off.

SCENE 6 — THE TERRIFYING REALIZATION

Larry stares at his phone in disbelief. Bethany stands beside him, visibly shaken.

LARRY

Her phone is completely switched off, and that makes this even more serious. We need to figure out where she went, who she talked to, and why she felt like she couldn’t come to us before leaving.

Bethany looks toward the empty driveway. Her mind begins connecting the pieces — Brooke’s recent heartbreak, the arguments about university, the pressure at home. And now this.

BETHANY

Larry, what if Brooke really left because of everything that happened? What if she felt trapped here and believed that running away was the only way she could finally escape all the pressure?

Larry doesn’t answer immediately. He stares down the street, hoping the car might somehow appear. But nothing happens. The house that had been peaceful only minutes earlier now feels frighteningly empty.

Brooke is somewhere on the road to Chicago. Her phone is off. Her parents have no idea where she is. And Destiny is the only person who knows about her secret plan.

LARRY

We have to find her before something goes wrong. I don’t care how far she has gone or what she thinks she needs right now — Brooke is still our daughter, and we cannot simply sit here and wait for her to come back.

Bethany nods, tears beginning to form in her eyes. But neither of them knows the truth: Brooke is already far away, and by the time they discover where she has gone, the consequences of her decision might change everything.
