Amber & Anthony — Divorce Drama

Amber, Anthony & D’Nisha

THE DIVORCE CONVERSATION

SCENE 1 — AMBER’S HOUSE
LIVING ROOM — AFTERNOON
Warm afternoon sunlight pours through the windows.
Amber sits on the couch, staring at her phone. Her expression is serious. She takes a deep breath before dialing Anthony’s number.
The phone rings.
ANTHONY

Hello?

Amber straightens in her seat.
AMBER

Anthony, I’m coming to your house. I need to talk to you about the divorce.

There is a brief silence on the other end.
Anthony sounds calm.
ANTHONY

Okay. Come over. We’ll talk about it.

AMBER

Fine. I’ll be there soon.

She ends the call.
Amber places the phone on the table and looks toward the door.
Her face shows determination. She knows the conversation ahead will not be easy.

SCENE 2 — ANTHONY’S HOUSE
LIVING ROOM — LATER
Anthony stands near the window, waiting.
D’NISHA

Who are you waiting for?

ANTHONY

Amber is coming over.

D’Nisha immediately looks up. Her expression changes.
D’NISHA

Amber?

ANTHONY

She said she wants to talk about the divorce.

D’NISHA

And you agreed to let her come here?

ANTHONY

I don’t see a problem with talking.

D’NISHA

There is always a problem when Amber comes around.

Before Anthony can respond, there is a knock at the door.
Anthony walks over and opens it.
Amber stands outside. She walks inside slowly.
Her eyes immediately meet D’Nisha’s. The atmosphere becomes tense.

SCENE 3 — ANTHONY’S HOUSE
LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS
AMBER

Thank you for agreeing to talk to me.

ANTHONY

Sit down. Let’s talk.

Amber sits. Anthony remains standing. D’Nisha stays nearby, listening carefully.
AMBER

I came here because I want to settle everything properly.

ANTHONY

Then tell me what you want.

AMBER

Before we finish talking about the divorce, I need to ask you something about your property.

ANTHONY

My property?

AMBER

Yes. I want to know what is going to happen to the property once the divorce is finalized.

ANTHONY

Amber, we can talk about the divorce, but that doesn’t mean you automatically get anything I own.

AMBER

I’m not saying I automatically get everything. I’m asking what my rights are and what you’re planning to do.

ANTHONY

I haven’t made any decisions about that.

AMBER

Then I want us to discuss it now.

D’NISHA

No.

AMBER

Excuse me?

D’NISHA

You heard me. You have no right to anything that belongs to Anthony anymore.

ANTHONY

D’Nisha, calm down.

D’NISHA

Why should I calm down? She comes into this house talking about Anthony’s property like she still has a place in his life.

AMBER

I came here to speak to Anthony. I didn’t come here to argue with you.

D’NISHA

But you’re standing here asking about his property.

AMBER

Because I was married to him.

D’NISHA

That marriage is ending.

AMBER

And that doesn’t give you the right to decide what happens between Anthony and me.

ANTHONY

Both of you, stop.

Neither woman speaks. The room falls silent.

SCENE 4 — ANTHONY’S HOUSE
LIVING ROOM — MOMENTS LATER
AMBER

Anthony, I didn’t come here to fight with D’Nisha.

ANTHONY

I know.

AMBER

You may be the woman in Anthony’s life right now, but you don’t get to erase the history between us.

D’NISHA

History doesn’t give you ownership of his property.

AMBER

And being with him now doesn’t make you the owner of it either.

ANTHONY

Enough!

AMBER

I was trying to have a serious conversation with you until she decided to attack me.

D’NISHA

I’m protecting what belongs to Anthony.

AMBER

Anthony can protect himself. He doesn’t need you speaking for him.

ANTHONY

Then ask me what you want to know.

AMBER

Fine. I want to know whether you are willing to discuss the property as part of the divorce settlement.

Anthony remains silent for a moment. His expression becomes serious.
ANTHONY

I’m willing to discuss the divorce.

ANTHONY

But I’m not promising you anything about my property.

Amber looks disappointed. D’Nisha gives a small, confident smile.
AMBER

Don’t smile like that.

D’NISHA

Why? Did I say something wrong?

AMBER

You’re acting like you’ve already won something.

D’NISHA

Because I know where I stand.

AMBER

And do you know where I stand?

Anthony doesn’t answer immediately. The silence says everything.

SCENE 5 — ANTHONY’S HOUSE
FRONT DOOR — EVENING
Amber walks toward the door. Anthony follows her. D’Nisha remains in the living room, watching.
AMBER

Anthony, I came here because I wanted to handle this like adults.

ANTHONY

I understand.

AMBER

But if we’re going to get divorced, we need to talk about everything. Not just what makes you comfortable.

ANTHONY

Then we’ll have another conversation.

AMBER

We will.

AMBER

And next time, I hope you let Anthony answer for himself.

D’NISHA

Next time, don’t come here expecting anything from him.

AMBER

We’ll see about that.

Amber walks out. Anthony watches her leave.
D’NISHA

She still thinks she has a claim on you.

ANTHONY

This divorce isn’t going to be as simple as I thought.

D’NISHA

Then you better be ready.

Anthony remains silent.
Outside, Amber walks toward her car, still angry.
She looks back at the house. Her expression changes from anger to determination.
AMBER

I’m not walking away without answers.

She gets into her car and drives away.
