Bethany: “My dad? Why?”
Larry: “Because I need some money for a new car. I’ve been dealing with this situation long enough, and I need a reliable vehicle.”
Bethany: “Larry, my father isn’t responsible for buying you a car.”

Bethany tried to explain that Larry should handle his own financial decisions, but Larry became increasingly frustrated.

Larry: “So you’re refusing to help me?”
Bethany: “I’m saying you should handle your own financial decisions.”

Larry continued pacing across the room, insisting that Bethany contact her father and let him decide whether to help.

After Bethany ended the call, Larry stared at her in disbelief. He questioned why she had involved her father.

Bethany: “Yes. I told him what was happening.”
Larry: “You had no reason to bring your father into this.”

Larry explained that he only wanted help getting a car, but Bethany made it clear that the argument had become much bigger than money.

Larry: “I only asked her to call you because I need help getting a car.”
Newburger: “Is that really what this is about?”
Bethany: “It started with the car. But it became much more than that.”

Newburger remained calm and asked Larry to step back and give Bethany some space.

Newburger: “Then you need to take a step back and give her some space.”
Larry: “You’re not going to come into my house and tell me how to handle my relationship.”
Newburger: “I’m not here to control your relationship. I’m here because my daughter asked me for help.”

Bethany Asks for Peace

Bethany stood behind her father and finally expressed what she wanted most: for the confrontation to end.

Bethany: “Dad, I just want everything to stop.”
Newburger: “Then that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
Larry: “So that’s it? You’re choosing your father over me?”
