The Phone Call That Changed Everything

The Phone Call That Changed Everything

The house was unusually quiet that afternoon. The silence made every conversation feel heavier than it normally would.
Bethany sat across from Brooke in the living room, believing she was giving her daughter some advice that could save her relationship with Isaiah. Brooke listened respectfully, even though she wasn’t sure she agreed with everything her mother was saying.
BETHANY
“Brooke, I’m only telling you this because I care about you. You need to fix things with Isaiah before it’s too late.”
BROOKE
“What do you mean?”
Bethany leaned forward.
BETHANY
“You and Isaiah keep having problems, and you keep acting like you have all the time in the world. You don’t. If you really care about him, you need to figure things out before the relationship falls apart completely.”
BROOKE
“Okay. I understand what you’re saying.”
Bethany paused before adding something that immediately changed the tone of the conversation.
BETHANY
“And Brooke, I’m telling you this because I don’t want you to end up like your mother, Sharra.”
BROOKE
“What does Sharra have to do with Isaiah and me?”
BETHANY
“More than you think. Look at what happened with her. Sometimes people ignore the warning signs in a relationship until there’s nothing left to save.”
BROOKE
“I don’t think that’s fair to say about her.”
BETHANY
“I’m not trying to insult her. I’m trying to make you understand that you have to recognize problems before they become permanent.”
BROOKE
“Okay. I’ll think about what you said.”
BETHANY
“That’s all I wanted.”
But the conversation stayed on Brooke’s mind long after she left the room.
Later that evening, Brooke found Larry downstairs near the kitchen. He was looking at his phone when he noticed the serious expression on her face.
LARRY
“What’s wrong?”
BROOKE
“Dad, can I tell you something?”
LARRY
“Of course.”
BROOKE
“It’s about Bethany.”
LARRY
“What happened?”
BROOKE
“She was talking to me about Isaiah. She said I needed to fix things with him before it was too late.”
LARRY
“Okay. That sounds like advice.”
BROOKE
“It was. But then she brought up Sharra.”
LARRY
“What did she say about Sharra?”
Brooke carefully explained everything Bethany had told her.
LARRY
“She really said that?”
BROOKE
“Yes. I didn’t think it was a big deal at first, but I thought you should know.”
Larry stood up.
LARRY
“Where is Bethany?”
BROOKE
“Dad, please don’t turn this into an argument.”
Larry didn’t answer. He walked toward the room where Bethany was sitting. Brooke followed.
BETHANY
“What’s wrong?”
LARRY
“Why did you say those things about Sharra?”
BETHANY
“You told him?”
BROOKE
“I thought Dad deserved to know.”
BETHANY
“You’re misunderstanding what I said.”
LARRY
“No, I’m not. You could have talked to Brooke about her relationship without bringing Sharra into it.”
BETHANY
“Why are you always defending her?”
LARRY
“Because you had no right to speak about her like that.”
The argument became increasingly heated. Brooke stood near the doorway, realizing the conversation was moving far beyond what she had intended.
Then Larry reacted in anger and struck Bethany.
The room immediately went silent.
Brooke froze.
Bethany stood stunned, her expression filled with shock and hurt. She slowly touched her face and looked at Larry.
BETHANY
“You actually did that?”
Larry said nothing. Brooke covered her mouth, struggling to process what she had witnessed.
BETHANY
“I always knew something was wrong.”
BETHANY
“I always knew Sharra was the reason you kept avoiding me.”
LARRY
“This isn’t about Sharra.”
BETHANY
“You keep saying that, but I never believed you.”
She wiped her tears.
BETHANY
“Every time her name comes up, you change. I thought I was imagining it. I thought I was just being insecure.”
Larry remained silent.
BETHANY
“I was right, wasn’t I? You still care about her.”
Larry didn’t answer.
That silence made Brooke uncomfortable. For the first time, she wondered if Bethany had accidentally exposed something Larry had been trying to keep hidden.
Then Larry’s phone began ringing.
He looked down at the screen.
His expression changed immediately.
BROOKE
“Dad… who is it?”
Larry didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
BETHANY
“Why did your face change when you saw that name?”
Larry slowly reached for the phone.
BROOKE
“Dad, answer it.”
Larry looked at the screen one more time.
The caller was someone neither Brooke nor Bethany expected.
Larry finally answered.
LARRY
“Hello?”
He listened. His face became more serious with every passing second.
Finally, Larry spoke.
LARRY
“I understand. I’ll be there.”
He ended the call.
Bethany immediately asked the question that had been hanging in the room.

BETHANY:
“Who was that?”

Larry looked at both of them. For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he took a deep breath.

LARRY:
“That was Sharra.”

Bethany’s expression changed.

Brooke stared at her father, realizing the phone call had just opened a door that might reveal the truth about everything Bethany had been questioning.
