Brooke Fires Back!

The tension between Bethany and Brooke has been growing. Bethany believes Brooke is making choices that could create serious problems for her future. She wants Brooke to change her behavior, but the way Bethany approaches the situation only makes Brooke more defensive.

What begins as a simple conversation soon turns into an emotional confrontation when Bethany brings up Brooke’s mother, Sharra.

SCENE 1 — A TENSE AFTERNOON

The afternoon is quiet at Larry’s house.

Brooke is sitting in the living room, looking at her phone. She appears relaxed, but Bethany has been watching her from across the room.

Bethany takes a deep breath and walks toward her.

BETHANY

“Brooke, we need to talk.”

Brooke slowly looks up.

BROOKE

“About what?”

BETHANY

“About the way you’ve been acting lately.”

Brooke rolls her eyes.

BROOKE

“I’m not doing anything wrong.”

Bethany shakes her head.

BETHANY

“That’s exactly what I’m talking about. You never want to listen when someone tries to give you advice.”

Brooke puts her phone down.

BROOKE

“Because everybody keeps trying to control me.”

SCENE 2 — BETHANY WARNS BROOKE

Bethany crosses her arms and looks at Brooke seriously.

BETHANY

“Brooke, you need to understand something. You can’t keep behaving this way and expect everything to work out.”

Brooke becomes defensive.

BROOKE

“I’m old enough to make my own decisions.”

BETHANY

“Being old enough to make decisions doesn’t mean every decision you make is a good one.”

Brooke looks annoyed.

BROOKE

“So now you think you know everything about my life?”

Bethany takes a deep breath.

BETHANY

“If you don’t change your behavior and get yourself together, you’re going to end up just like your mom, Sharra.”

Brooke immediately looks at Bethany in shock.

BETHANY

“Look at how she is living her life. If you keep going down this road, you’re going to end up the same way.”

The room suddenly becomes silent.

SCENE 3 — BROOKE BECOMES ANGRY

Brooke slowly stands up from the couch.

Her face shows anger and disbelief.

BROOKE

“What did you just say?”

Bethany realizes that her words have deeply upset Brooke.

BETHANY

“Brooke, I’m only telling you the truth.”

Brooke shakes her head.

BROOKE

“No. You’re insulting my mom.”

BETHANY

“I’m not trying to insult her. I’m telling you that you need to learn from what you see around you.”

Brooke becomes even more upset.

BROOKE

“You don’t get to use my mom like that just because you’re angry with me!”

SCENE 4 — “HOW DARE YOU?”

Brooke takes a deep breath and looks directly at Bethany.

BROOKE

“Bethany, how dare you talk about my mom like that?”

Bethany looks surprised by Brooke’s reaction.

BROOKE

“How could you even have the nerve to say something like that about her?”

BETHANY

“Brooke, I didn’t say it to hurt you.”

Brooke immediately responds.

BROOKE

“But you did hurt me!”

Brooke wipes away a tear.

BROOKE

“You don’t know everything my mom has been through. You don’t know everything she has done for me. You have no right to stand here and judge her.”

SCENE 5 — BROOKE STANDS UP FOR HERSELF

Brooke wipes away another tear. Her anger is still obvious.

BROOKE

“And another thing, Bethany… I’ll do whatever I want with my life.”

Bethany looks at her seriously.

BETHANY

“That’s exactly the attitude I’m talking about.”

BROOKE

“No. You just don’t like the fact that I’m making my own choices.”

BETHANY

“I’m trying to protect you.”

BROOKE

“I don’t need you to control me to protect me.”

The words leave Bethany speechless.

BROOKE

“You have no say in everything I do, Bethany.”

SCENE 6 — THE ARGUMENT GETS WORSE

The conversation becomes more heated.

BETHANY

“Brooke, one day you may understand why I’m saying these things.”

BROOKE

“Maybe one day you’ll understand that constantly judging people doesn’t help them.”

Bethany looks frustrated.

BETHANY

“You think I’m judging you?”

BROOKE

“Yes! You’re judging me because of my choices. And now you’re judging my mom too.”

Bethany looks away.

BROOKE

“The way you talked about her said enough.”

SCENE 7 — BROOKE MAKES A THREAT

Brooke looks at Bethany with determination.

BROOKE

“I’m going to tell my dad.”

Bethany’s expression changes.

BETHANY

“Tell Larry what?”

BROOKE

“I’m going to tell Dad exactly what you said about Mom.”

Bethany becomes concerned.

BETHANY

“Brooke, you don’t need to involve Larry in this.”

BROOKE

“Oh, I think he needs to know.”

SCENE 8 — LARRY HEARS THE TENSION

Suddenly, footsteps can be heard from the hallway.

Larry enters the room and immediately notices the tension between Bethany and Brooke.

LARRY

“What’s going on?”

Brooke turns toward him.

LARRY

“Brooke, why are you upset?”

Brooke looks at Bethany and then back at Larry.

BROOKE

“Dad, Bethany just said something about Mom that you need to hear.”

Bethany closes her eyes for a moment.

She realizes the situation is about to become much bigger.

SCENE 9 — BETHANY EXPLAINS HERSELF

Larry looks at Bethany.

LARRY

“What did you say?”

Bethany takes a deep breath.

BETHANY

“I was trying to warn Brooke.”

LARRY

“Warn her about what?”

BETHANY

“I told her that if she doesn’t change her behavior, she could end up making the same mistakes her mother made.”

Brooke immediately reacts.

BROOKE

“You see? That’s exactly what she said!”

Larry looks serious.

LARRY

“Bethany, you could have made your point without bringing Sharra into it.”

Bethany looks down.

BETHANY

“I understand that now.”

SCENE 10 — THE AFTERMATH

The room becomes quiet.

Larry looks at Brooke.

LARRY

“Brooke, you also need to understand that you have responsibilities.”

Brooke nods.

BROOKE

“I understand, Dad.”

Larry then looks at Bethany.

LARRY

“But everyone needs to be respectful when talking about each other.”

Bethany nods slowly.

BETHANY

“You’re right.”

Brooke looks at Bethany.

For a moment, neither woman speaks.

Bethany finally takes a step toward Brooke.

BETHANY

“I’m sorry for the way I said it.”

Brooke looks at her.

BROOKE

“I’m still angry.”

Bethany slowly nods.

BETHANY

“I understand.”

The argument has finally stopped, but the emotional damage remains.

Larry watches them quietly, knowing that this family still has many problems to work through.

However, this confrontation may be the beginning of an important conversation between Bethany and Brooke.
