When the Door Finally Closed
A stormy night, a broken marriage, and Larry’s final stand for Brooke.
1. Bethany Cast Out Into the Storm
The rain was coming down in relentless sheets, blurring the city lights into smudges of yellow and red. Outside the heavy oak door of the grand suburban home, Bethany tumbled onto the slick, wet pavement of the porch. Her knees scraped against the stone, but the physical pain paled in comparison to the sting on her scalp.
Larry stood towering in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the warm lights of the foyer he had just ejected her from. His hand was still clenched into a fist, white-knuckled from the force with which he had grabbed her hair to drag her out. His face was a mask of cold, calculated fury—a look Bethany had never seen in all their three years of marriage.
2. The Divorce Papers She Never Expected
He reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a thick white envelope, tossing it onto the wet ground near her feet.
Bethany looked up, her hair plastered to her face, water dripping down her nose.
“Talk about what?” Larry snapped, taking a step forward onto the porch, his eyes flashing. “You think you can just say whatever you want without consequences? You had no right to talk to Brooke like that!”
3. Larry Defends Brooke
He leaned down, pointing a rigid finger at her face.
“Brooke has feelings, Bethany. Have you even thought for a single second about what she must be thinking about you right now? What kind of monster she sees when she looks at you?”
Bethany swallowed hard, the cold seeping through her clothes. She had lost her temper earlier that evening. Brooke had been rebellious, talking back, and in a moment of frustration, Bethany had let her anger get the better of her.
But she hadn’t realized Larry was waiting in the shadows, looking for any excuse, any slip-up, to end their marriage.
4. No Forgiveness, No Second Chance
“I was upset, Larry,” Bethany pleaded, her breath forming small white clouds in the freezing night air. “She pushed me, and I snapped. I didn’t mean it—”
“Brooke has been through enough in her life without my wife kicking her while she’s down. You tormented her tonight, Bethany. And I am not going to let that go. I will never forgive you for this.”
He stepped back into the warmth of the hallway and gripped the edge of the door.
5. The Door Slams Shut on Their Marriage
Before Bethany could scramble to her feet, the heavy door slammed shut. The sharp click of the deadbolt sliding into place sounded like a final judgment.
She was left sitting alone in the pouring rain, the white envelope soaking up water at her feet, marked with the words Dissolution of Marriage. She pulled her knees to her chest, listening to the muffled silence of the house that was no longer her home.
Some Lines Cannot Be Uncrossed
Bethany realized too late that some lines, once crossed, leave you completely out in the cold.
