Early Morning
The house is quiet. Soft morning light enters through the bedroom window as Bethany walks into Brooke’s room with a basket of folded clothes. She looks around. The room is slightly messy. Bethany sighs and begins cleaning. She picks up clothes from the floor, straightens the pillows, and clears the table. Then she notices Brooke’s purse lying beside the bed. Bethany pauses. She picks it up.
BETHANY: I’ll just put this away.
Bethany opens the purse to organize it. Suddenly, her expression changes. She sees a small packet of pregnancy-control pills inside. Bethany freezes. Her eyes widen. She carefully picks up the packet and looks at it again, trying to understand what she is seeing.
BETHANY: Brooke… what is this?
Bethany looks toward the bedroom door. She is completely shocked. Her mind starts racing.
BETHANY: Why would Brooke have these?
She sits on the edge of the bed, still holding the packet. The peaceful morning suddenly feels tense. Bethany looks at the pills again.
BETHANY: She’s been hiding this from everyone?
A faint sound comes from the hallway. Bethany quickly looks up. Footsteps are getting closer.
Brooke Returns
Brooke suddenly appears at the bedroom doorway. She stops. Her eyes immediately fall on Bethany’s hands. Brooke recognizes the packet. Her face changes instantly.
BROOKE: Bethany!
Bethany turns around. Brooke rushes toward her.
BROOKE: Wait! Give that to me!
Bethany stands up, still shocked. Brooke reaches for the packet. Bethany pulls her hand away.
BETHANY: Brooke, what is this?
Brooke becomes nervous.
BROOKE: It’s nothing. Just give it back.
BETHANY: Nothing?
Bethany looks at the packet again.
BETHANY: Then why are you so scared that I found it?
Brooke looks down. She struggles to find the right words.
BROOKE: I can explain.
BETHANY: Then explain it.
Brooke takes another step toward her.
BROOKE: Please, Bethany. Don’t tell Larry.
Bethany’s expression becomes even more serious. She realizes Brooke is not simply embarrassed. She is afraid of what Larry might think.
BETHANY: Why shouldn’t I tell him?
Brooke shakes her head.
BROOKE: Because he’ll misunderstand everything.
Bethany looks at her carefully.
BETHANY: Then help me understand.
Brooke remains silent. The room becomes completely quiet.
Bethany Demands Answers
Bethany places the packet on the table. She crosses her arms.
BETHANY: Brooke, I’m not trying to embarrass you.
Brooke looks at her.
BETHANY: But finding something like this in your purse and hearing you tell me not to tell Larry makes this much more serious.
Brooke takes a deep breath.
BROOKE: I didn’t want anyone finding it.
BETHANY: I can see that.
Brooke looks toward the floor.
BROOKE: I just wanted some privacy.
Bethany’s expression softens slightly.
BETHANY: I understand wanting privacy.
She pauses.
BETHANY: But hiding something important can create even bigger problems.
Brooke looks back at her.
BROOKE: Please don’t tell him.
Bethany doesn’t answer immediately. She looks toward the doorway. Then back at Brooke.
BETHANY: I need to think about this.
Brooke steps forward.
BROOKE: Bethany, please.
Bethany picks up the packet.
BETHANY: I won’t make a scene.
Brooke’s eyes widen.
BROOKE: What does that mean?
Bethany looks directly at her.
BETHANY: It means Larry needs to know what’s happening in this house.
Brooke becomes visibly worried.
The Confrontation
Later that morning, Larry is downstairs. He is sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee and looking through his phone. Bethany walks into the room. She looks serious. Larry immediately notices.
LARRY: What’s wrong?
Bethany doesn’t answer right away. She sits across from him.
LARRY: Bethany?
Bethany takes a breath.
BETHANY: I found something in Brooke’s room this morning.
Larry puts his phone down.
LARRY: What did you find?
Bethany carefully places the packet on the table. Larry looks at it. His expression changes. He doesn’t speak for several seconds.
LARRY: Where did you get this?
BETHANY: It was inside Brooke’s purse.
Larry looks toward the hallway. His face shows surprise and concern.
LARRY: Brooke had this?
Bethany nods.
BETHANY: Yes.
Larry leans back in his chair. He is clearly trying to process the information.
LARRY: Did you ask her about it?
BETHANY: Yes. She came into the room while I was holding it.
Larry looks at Bethany.
LARRY: What did she say?
BETHANY: She asked me not to tell you.
Larry becomes quiet. That statement affects him more than anything else.
LARRY: She asked you to keep it from me?
Bethany nods.
BETHANY: She said she was afraid you would misunderstand.
Larry slowly shakes his head.
LARRY: I don’t want to jump to conclusions.
Bethany looks surprised.
BETHANY: You’re not angry?
Larry stands up.
LARRY: I’m concerned.
He looks toward the stairs.
LARRY: But I need to hear Brooke’s side before I decide anything.
Brooke Enters
Brooke walks downstairs. She immediately sees Bethany and Larry standing together. Her face falls. She knows. Larry looks at her.
LARRY: Brooke, come here.
Brooke slowly approaches.
BROOKE: Dad…
Larry keeps his voice calm.
LARRY: Bethany told me what she found.
Brooke looks at Bethany. Then she looks down.
BROOKE: I didn’t want you to know.
Larry nods.
LARRY: I understand that.
Brooke looks surprised by his calm response.
LARRY: But hiding something from your family doesn’t make the situation easier.
Brooke takes a deep breath.
BROOKE: I was scared you’d get angry.
Larry pauses.
LARRY: I might be surprised. I might have questions. But I’m going to listen first.
Brooke’s eyes become emotional.
BROOKE: I didn’t know how to talk about it.
Larry steps closer.
LARRY: Then start now.
Bethany remains silent. She watches the conversation carefully. Larry looks at Brooke.
LARRY: I don’t want secrets in this house.
Brooke nods slowly.
BROOKE: Okay.
Larry points toward the chair.
LARRY: Sit down. We’ll talk about everything calmly.
Brooke sits. Bethany takes a seat beside Larry. The tension in the room remains. But now, the truth is finally out in the open. Larry looks between Bethany and Brooke.
LARRY: Whatever happened, we’re going to deal with it together.
Brooke looks down. Bethany watches her closely. The three sit in silence. For the first time that morning, nobody is hiding anything. But the questions surrounding Brooke’s secret have only just begun.
