Bethany Decides to Leave Larry After He Says He Is No Longer Interested

A dramatic story of heartbreak, confrontation, and an unexpected decision

SCENE 1 — THE LIVING ROOM

The room is quiet. Bethany stands near Larry, trying to understand why he has been distant lately. Larry sits on the couch, looking uncomfortable and avoiding eye contact.

Bethany takes a deep breath before finally confronting him.

BETHANY
“Larry, why are you avoiding me?”

Larry looks at her for a moment. He seems hesitant, but Bethany can tell that he has something difficult to say.

LARRY
“Bethany, I’m not trying to hurt you. I just don’t feel the same way about you anymore.”

Bethany is stunned by Larry’s words. She never expected him to be so direct.

BETHANY
“What do you mean you don’t feel the same way? Why aren’t you interested in me anymore?”

Larry remains silent.

Bethany steps closer.

BETHANY
“I’ve done so much for you, Larry. I even had surgery because I wanted you to be happy. I wanted you to look at me the way you used to.”

Larry lowers his eyes.

LARRY
“Bethany, I know you did those things, and I appreciate what you tried to do. But my feelings aren’t something I can force.”

Bethany shakes her head, becoming more emotional.

BETHANY
“So after everything I did, you still don’t like me?”

Larry looks at her seriously.

LARRY
“It’s not about what you did or didn’t do. Something has changed for me.”

LARRY
“Bethany, there’s just something different now. You don’t have that same spark between us anymore.”

Bethany stares at him in disbelief. His words hurt her deeply.

SCENE 2 — BETHANY LOSES HER PATIENCE

Bethany walks toward the other side of the room, trying to control her emotions.

She wipes away a tear and turns back toward Larry.

BETHANY
“You know what, Larry? I’m tired of trying to prove myself to you.”

Larry stands up slowly.

LARRY
“Bethany, I didn’t say you weren’t good enough.”

BETHANY
“But that’s exactly how you’re making me feel!”

Larry tries to respond, but Bethany raises her hand.

BETHANY
“No. Let me finish.”

Larry becomes quiet.

BETHANY
“I kept thinking that if I changed something, you would look at me differently. I thought if I made you happy, you would finally appreciate me again.”

She looks toward the hallway.

BETHANY
“But now I realize that nothing I do is going to change how you feel.”

Larry looks concerned.

LARRY
“Bethany, please calm down. We can talk about this.”

Bethany gives him an angry look.

BETHANY
“No, Larry. I’ve talked enough.”

She walks toward the bedroom.

Larry follows her a few steps.

LARRY
“Where are you going?”

Bethany turns around.

BETHANY
“I’m leaving.”

Larry freezes. He suddenly realizes that Bethany is serious.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY PACKS HER THINGS

Bethany enters the bedroom and begins pulling clothes from the closet. She places them into a suitcase with quick, angry movements.

Larry stands at the doorway, watching her.

LARRY
“Bethany, you don’t have to make this decision while you’re angry.”

Bethany continues packing.

BETHANY
“I’m not making this decision because I’m angry. I’m making it because I finally understand what you’re telling me.”

Larry takes a few steps inside.

LARRY
“And what exactly am I telling you?”

Bethany closes the suitcase.

BETHANY
“That you don’t want me anymore.”

Larry looks down.

LARRY
“That’s not what I wanted this conversation to become.”

BETHANY
“But that’s what it became.”

Bethany picks up the suitcase.

LARRY
“Bethany, where are you going to go?”

BETHANY
“I don’t know yet. But I know I can’t stay here and keep pretending everything is okay.”

Larry’s expression becomes more worried.

SCENE 4 — LARRY TRIES TO STOP HER

Bethany walks toward the front door with her suitcase. Larry follows behind her.

LARRY
“Bethany, wait.”

She keeps walking.

LARRY
“Please, just give me a minute.”

Bethany stops but doesn’t turn around.

BETHANY
“What do you want to say now?”

Larry struggles to find the right words.

LARRY
“I don’t want you to leave like this.”

Bethany slowly turns around.

BETHANY
“Then how did you want me to leave?”

Larry remains silent.

Bethany looks at him with disappointment.

BETHANY
“You told me you’re not interested in me anymore. You told me the spark is gone. What did you expect me to do?”

Larry takes a step closer.

LARRY
“I just wanted to be honest with you.”

BETHANY
“And I’m being honest with you now. I can’t live in a house where I feel unwanted.”

SCENE 5 — BETHANY MAKES HER DECISION

Bethany grabs the handle of her suitcase. Larry reaches toward her, trying to get her to stop.

LARRY
“Bethany, please. Don’t walk out that door yet.”

Bethany looks at his hand and then at his face.

BETHANY
“Why should I stay?”

Larry has no immediate answer.

Bethany waits.

BETHANY
“Tell me one reason.”

Larry takes a breath.

LARRY
“Because I don’t want us to end like this.”

Bethany’s expression softens for a moment, but she remains upset.

BETHANY
“Larry, maybe you should have thought about that before telling me you weren’t interested in me anymore.”

Larry looks frustrated with himself.

LARRY
“I know.”

Bethany turns toward the door again.

BETHANY
“I’ve been waiting for you to talk to me for a long time.”

She opens the door.

SCENE 6 — LARRY REALIZES WHAT HE COULD LOSE

Bethany steps outside with her suitcase. Larry remains standing in the doorway.

His expression changes as he watches her walk away.

LARRY
“Bethany…”

She stops.

Larry looks at her, suddenly uncertain.

LARRY
“Are you really leaving?”

Bethany turns around.

BETHANY
“Yes.”

Larry takes a few steps toward her.

LARRY
“And you’re not coming back?”

Bethany looks hurt.

BETHANY
“I don’t know.”

Larry’s face becomes serious.

LARRY
“What does that mean?”

BETHANY
“It means I need time away from you.”

She turns around again.

Larry watches her move toward her car.

For the first time, Larry realizes that Bethany may actually walk away from their relationship.

SCENE 7 — LARRY’S LAST ATTEMPT

Bethany places her suitcase near the car. Larry walks outside.

LARRY
“Bethany, wait.”

She turns around.

LARRY
“I know I hurt you.”

Bethany says nothing.

LARRY
“And I know saying those things made you feel like everything you did for me meant nothing.”

Bethany looks down.

LARRY
“But that wasn’t my intention.”

Bethany finally responds.

BETHANY
“Intentions don’t erase what happened, Larry.”

Larry nods slowly.

LARRY
“I understand.”

Bethany looks toward the house.

BETHANY
“I gave that house everything I had. I gave our relationship everything I had. But I can’t keep fighting for someone who says he doesn’t want me.”

Larry takes a deep breath.

LARRY
“So what happens now?”

Bethany looks directly at him.

BETHANY
“Now I leave.”

She picks up her bag.

SCENE 8 — THE UNEXPECTED MOMENT

Bethany opens the car door.

Larry suddenly becomes emotional.

LARRY
“Bethany, I don’t know what’s going to happen after today.”

Bethany pauses.

LARRY
“But I don’t want you to think I never cared about you.”

Bethany looks back at him.

BETHANY
“Then maybe you should have shown me that before I had to walk away.”

Larry has no response.

Bethany gets into the car.

Larry steps back.

The car starts.

He watches as Bethany slowly drives away.

Larry remains outside, staring at the road.

SCENE 9 — LARRY IS LEFT ALONE

Larry eventually walks back into the house.

The living room feels completely different now.

Bethany’s things are gone.

Larry looks around and sits on the couch, thinking about everything that happened.

His own words keep replaying in his mind.

He had told Bethany that he was no longer interested.

He had told her that the spark was gone.

He considers calling Bethany.

His finger hovers over her name.

But he stops.

Larry puts the phone down.
