A Secret That Changes Everything

Brooke thought Larry was taking her away from the pain. She never imagined that, at the exact same time, someone else would uncover a secret capable of destroying everything they thought they knew about their marriage.

SCENE 1 — LIVING ROOM — EVENING

Brooke sits silently on the couch.

Her eyes are swollen from crying. She keeps staring at the floor, trying desperately to hide how broken she feels.

Larry watches her from across the room.

He can see that she is struggling.

LARRY
“Brooke, you can’t keep sitting here like this.”

Brooke slowly looks up.

BROOKE
“I don’t know what else to do.”

Larry walks toward her.

His expression softens.

LARRY
“Come with me.”

Brooke looks confused.

BROOKE
“Where?”

Larry picks up his car keys.

LARRY
“Anywhere. Just somewhere you can breathe.”

Brooke hesitates.

She wipes a tear from her cheek.

BROOKE
“I don’t feel like going anywhere.”

Larry kneels beside her.

LARRY
“That’s exactly why you need to go.”

Brooke looks into his eyes.

For a moment, she says nothing.

Then she slowly nods.

SCENE 2 — OUTSIDE THE HOUSE — MOMENTS LATER

Larry opens the passenger door for Brooke.

She gets inside quietly.

Larry closes the door and walks around to the driver’s side.

As the car pulls away, Brooke looks back at the house.

Something about her expression makes Larry uneasy.

But he says nothing.

The house becomes smaller in the distance.

Neither of them notices what is about to happen inside.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY’S ROOM — SAME TIME

Bethany is cleaning her room.

She moves slowly from one side to the other, picking up clothes and organizing drawers.

The house is unusually quiet.

She opens a drawer that she rarely touches.

Inside are old documents, envelopes, and personal belongings.

Bethany begins sorting through them.

Then she notices a thick white envelope hidden underneath some papers.

She pulls it out.

Her name isn’t written on the front.

Bethany frowns.

BETHANY
“What is this?”

She turns the envelope over.

Her hands suddenly stop moving.

She carefully opens it.

A few papers slide into her hands.

She starts reading.

Her expression changes immediately.

Her eyes widen.

Her breathing becomes heavier.

BETHANY
“No…”

She reads the first page again.

Then again.

She cannot believe what she is seeing.

SCENE 4 — BETHANY’S ROOM — CONTINUOUS

Bethany sits on the edge of the bed.

The divorce papers tremble in her hands.

Tears slowly fill her eyes.

She looks at the signatures.

The names.

The date.

Everything appears real.

Her lips begin to shake.

BETHANY
“This can’t be happening.”

She presses a hand against her mouth to stop herself from crying.

But the tears come anyway.

One falls onto the paper.

Then another.

Bethany stands suddenly and begins pacing around the room.

BETHANY
“Why would they hide this from me?”

She looks toward the door.

For a second, she considers running downstairs.

But something stops her.

She looks back at the papers.

There is another page attached to the divorce documents.

Bethany slowly pulls it free.

Her eyes scan the writing.

Her face turns pale.

Whatever she has just read is even more disturbing than the divorce itself.

SCENE 5 — ON THE ROAD — NIGHT

Larry drives through the city.

Brooke sits beside him, staring through the window.

The lights outside blur through her tear-filled eyes.

Larry glances at her.

LARRY
“You don’t have to talk about it.”

Brooke remains silent.

After several seconds, she finally speaks.

BROOKE
“Larry… what if everything we believed was a lie?”

Larry’s hands tighten around the steering wheel.

He looks at her.

LARRY
“What are you talking about?”

Brooke shakes her head.

BROOKE
“I don’t know anymore.”

Larry looks back at the road.

His expression becomes serious.

There is something he clearly wants to say.

But he keeps it to himself.

SCENE 6 — BETHANY’S ROOM — LATER

Bethany is still sitting on the bed.

The divorce papers are spread across her lap.

She is crying quietly now.

Her eyes remain fixed on one particular line.

A line that seems to explain why Larry and Brooke have been acting strangely.

She picks up her phone.

Her thumb hovers over Larry’s name.

She is about to call him.

Then she stops.

A new thought crosses her mind.

What if Larry already knows she found the papers?

Bethany lowers the phone.

Her fear grows.

BETHANY
“What are you hiding?”

Suddenly, she hears footsteps outside her room.

Bethany freezes.

The footsteps stop directly outside the door.

The door handle begins to move.

Bethany looks down at the divorce papers.

Then at the door.

She has only seconds to decide what to do.

The door slowly opens.

SCENE 7 — THE UNKNOWN VISITOR

Bethany’s eyes widen.

Someone stands in the doorway.

She cannot see the person’s face clearly.

The stranger looks directly at the papers in Bethany’s hands.

Bethany steps backward.

BETHANY
“Who are you?”

No answer.

The person takes one step into the room.

Bethany clutches the documents against her chest.

BETHANY
“How do you know about these?”

The stranger finally speaks.

STRANGER
“You weren’t supposed to find them.”

Bethany’s face turns pale.

BETHANY
“Why?”

The stranger looks toward the hallway.

Then back at her.

STRANGER
“Because those papers aren’t the real secret.”

Bethany stops breathing for a moment.

BETHANY
“Then what is?”

The stranger slowly reaches into a pocket and pulls out another envelope.

Bethany stares at it.

Her eyes fill with fear.

Before the stranger can explain, Larry’s phone suddenly rings downstairs.

Bethany recognizes the ringtone.

Larry is back.

But Larry was supposed to be far away with Brooke.

Bethany looks at the stranger.

Then toward the door.

Her heart pounds.

The stranger whispers one final sentence.

STRANGER
“If Larry finds out you have those papers… Brooke may never come back.”

Bethany’s eyes widen in shock.

She looks down at the envelope.

There is a name written across it.

A name she never expected to see.
