Brooke’s Choice

Brooke’s Choice

The bedroom was quiet, filled with the soft glow of the evening light. Brooke sat on the bed, listening carefully to Bethany. Something about Bethany’s words felt different today. She was not simply giving Brooke advice; she was encouraging her to make choices she had never felt free enough to make before.

Brooke had always been used to asking for permission, especially from her father, Larry. Larry was protective and strict, and although Brooke knew that he cared about her, sometimes she felt as though every decision in her life had to be approved by someone else.

“You’re Old Enough Now”

Bethany moved closer to Brooke and spoke in a calm, confident voice.

“Brooke, you’re grown up now. You don’t need to ask your father Larry for permission for every little thing anymore. You can make your own decisions.”

Brooke looked at Bethany with surprise. She was not expecting to hear those words. Before Brooke could respond, Bethany continued.

“If you want to go out with Isaiah, then go. Have fun. If you need money, I’ll give it to you. You don’t have to ask Larry for permission every time you want to do something.”

Brooke’s expression changed. For a moment, she felt excited by the idea of having that kind of freedom. Isaiah had been on her mind, and the thought of being able to spend time with him without having to explain every detail to Larry sounded appealing.

But there was still a small voice inside Brooke telling her that things could not possibly be this simple.

What Bethany Said About Sharra

Bethany’s expression became more serious as she continued talking.

“And Brooke, you don’t need permission from your mother Sharra either. Your mother is busy enjoying her own life. If she really cared about you, she would have kept you with her.”

Brooke immediately became quiet.

Hearing Sharra’s name brought a mixture of emotions to her heart. Brooke had always had complicated feelings about her mother. There were times when she wanted to believe that Sharra cared deeply about her, but there were other moments when Brooke felt as though her mother had become distant.

Bethany reached toward Brooke and continued in a softer voice.

“Look, Brooke. I’ve kept you here with me. I support you in the things you want to do. I care about you more than you realize. I want you to enjoy your life and make your own choices.”

Brooke listened carefully to every word. Bethany’s speech sounded convincing, but something about it also made Brooke uncomfortable. She could not decide whether Bethany was truly protecting her or slowly pushing her away from the people who cared about her.

Larry Was Standing at the Door

What Brooke did not know was that someone had arrived at the bedroom door.

Larry had returned home quietly. As he approached the room, he noticed that the door was partially open. He was about to walk in when he heard Bethany speaking.

At first, Larry only heard a few words. Then he stopped completely.

He listened.

“You’re old enough now…”

“You don’t need Larry’s permission…”

“Go out with Isaiah…”

“I’ll give you money…”

“Sharra doesn’t care about you…”

Larry’s expression slowly hardened.

He stood silently in the doorway, listening to every word. His eyes remained fixed on Bethany. The more he heard, the angrier he became.

Larry had spent years trying to protect Brooke. Hearing someone encourage her to ignore his decisions—and questioning whether her own mother cared about her—was something he could not simply ignore.

A Silent Anger

Larry did not immediately enter the room. He remained in the doorway, watching Bethany and Brooke.

Brooke was still listening carefully, completely unaware that her father was standing only a few feet away.

Bethany continued.

“You don’t need anyone’s permission to be happy, Brooke. You’re old enough to decide what you want for your own life.”

Brooke slowly nodded, still processing everything Bethany had said.

Then, almost instinctively, she looked toward the doorway.

Her eyes suddenly widened.

Larry was standing there.

He had heard everything.

The room became completely silent.

Bethany’s smile disappeared as soon as she saw Larry’s expression. Brooke looked from Bethany to her father, realizing that something had just changed.

The Moment Everything Changed

Larry’s eyes remained fixed on Bethany. His face showed controlled anger, but he still had not said a single word.

Bethany stood frozen.

Brooke could feel the tension filling the room.

Larry had heard Bethany telling Brooke that she did not need his permission. He had heard her offer Brooke money to go out with Isaiah. Most importantly, he had heard Bethany question Sharra’s love for her daughter.

But Larry’s silence was almost more frightening than an angry outburst.

He finally took one slow step into the room.

Brooke held her breath.

Bethany stared at him, unsure what he was going to say.

Larry looked at Bethany and then at Brooke.

Why had Bethany been encouraging Brooke to keep things from him? Was she really trying to help Brooke, or was there another reason behind everything she had said?

Larry took another step forward.

And just as he opened his mouth to speak, Brooke realized that whatever happened next could change her relationship with Bethany—and her entire family—forever.
