🎬 Family Tension
Dave & Amber – Cinematic Screenplay
INT. DAVE AND AMBER’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – EVENING
The front door closes with a soft click.
The house is unusually quiet.
The tension from the earlier family argument still hangs in the air like a heavy storm cloud.
Amber slowly places her purse on the table.
She lets out a deep breath, hoping the evening is finally over.
Behind her, Dave remains standing near the doorway.
His arms are folded.
His expression is calm—but beneath that calm is obvious disappointment.
A long silence fills the room.
Finally, Dave speaks.
DAVE
Amber…
We need to talk.
Amber turns toward him.
She already knows this conversation isn’t going to be easy.
AMBER
I know you’re upset.
Dave walks a few slow steps closer.
He isn’t shouting.
His controlled voice makes the moment even more serious.
DAVE
Upset?
Yes.
Because today you crossed a line.
AMBER
I wasn’t trying to disrespect you.
I was only trying to calm things down.
DAVE
That’s not what happened.
You defended Jaden.
You made it seem like I was overreacting.
And you stepped into a decision that belonged to me as his father.
The room falls silent again.
Amber looks at Dave with mixed emotions.
AMBER
I never wanted to undermine you.
I just didn’t want the argument to get worse.
Jaden was already emotional.
I thought someone needed to calm the situation.
DAVE
There’s a difference between calming a situation…
and taking someone’s side.
Today, you chose his side.
AMBER
No.
I chose peace.
There’s a difference.
DAVE
Maybe that’s how you see it.
But that’s not how it felt to me.
When I looked at you…
I didn’t feel like my partner was standing beside me.
I felt like I was standing alone.
Amber’s expression softens.
Those words hit harder than she expected.
AMBER
Dave…
I never wanted you to feel alone.
Not for a second.
DAVE
Being a parent isn’t easy.
Sometimes I have to make decisions my kids won’t like.
Sometimes I have to be the bad guy.
When you questioned me in front of Jaden…
it weakened my authority.
AMBER
Maybe…
I should have waited until we were alone.
Maybe I handled it the wrong way.
But please believe me…
Everything I said came from love.
I care about Jaden.
He’s part of this family now.
When I saw him hurting…
my heart reacted before my mind did.
DAVE
I know you love him.
I’ve never doubted that.
But love also means trusting me to be his father.
AMBER
You’re right.
I should have trusted you more.
I’m sorry.
I wasn’t trying to replace you.
I wasn’t trying to challenge your decision.
DAVE
I don’t need you to agree with every decision I make.
But if you disagree…
talk to me privately.
Not in front of the kids.
AMBER
I promise.
Next time I’ll wait.
We’ll discuss it together first.
DAVE
We’re supposed to be a team.
Even when we disagree.
Especially then.
AMBER
We are a team.
And I’m sorry I forgot that today.
DAVE
We’ll both make mistakes.
That’s part of being parents.
The important thing…
is that we learn from them.
From upstairs, the faint sound of Jaden’s bedroom door closing echoes through the house.
Both of them instinctively look toward the staircase.
DAVE
Tomorrow…
I’ll talk to him again.
This time…
with a calmer heart.
AMBER
And if you need me…
I’ll support you.
DAVE
That’s all I wanted to hear.
Amber steps forward and hugs him.
Dave wraps his arms around her.
The argument is over.
The lesson remains.
Parenting isn’t about winning arguments.
It’s about standing together, learning together, and protecting the family—even when emotions run high.
