The $10,000 Secret
The $10,000 Secret

Scene 1 – INT. BETHANY’S APARTMENT – LATE AFTERNOON

The apartment is quiet. Sunlight slips through the curtains, casting long shadows across the living room. Medical brochures and surgery estimates are spread across the coffee table.
Bethany sits on the couch staring at the papers. Her hands tremble as she scrolls through her phone and stops at Matt’s contact.
MATT
Hello?
Everything okay?
BETHANY
Matt…
I’m sorry to bother you.
I wouldn’t call unless I had no other choice.
MATT
Take your time.
What’s going on?
BETHANY
I’ve been approved for weight-loss surgery.

But I’m short…
Ten thousand dollars.

I don’t know who else to ask.
Matt remains silent. He simply listens.
MATT
Is this something you truly want?
BETHANY
More than anything.
I want a second chance at life.
MATT
Meet me tonight.
Same restaurant on Maple Street.
We’ll talk there.
BETHANY
Thank you…
Thank you so much.

Scene 2 – INT. QUIET RESTAURANT – EVENING

Soft piano music fills the elegant restaurant. Couples enjoy dinner while candles flicker across every table.
Bethany nervously sits across from Matt.
BETHANY
I’ve spent years pretending I’m okay.
But I’m not.

Every step hurts.
Every mirror reminds me of what I’ve become.
MATT
You don’t have to explain yourself.
BETHANY
I do.

People think surgery is the easy way.
They don’t know how many nights I’ve cried…
Or how many diets failed.

Scene 3 – CONTINUOUS

Matt quietly reaches into his jacket and slides a thick envelope across the table.
MATT
It’s all there.
Ten thousand dollars.

No contracts.
No pressure.

Just promise me one thing.
BETHANY
What’s that?
MATT
Promise you’ll fight for yourself.
Not for anyone else.
For you.
BETHANY
I don’t know how to thank you.
MATT
You already did.
By asking for help.
Sometimes that’s the hardest thing anyone can do.

Scene 4 – ANOTHER TABLE

Larry watches the entire exchange from a nearby table.
From his angle, it looks like Matt is secretly giving Bethany money.
LARRY
So this is what you’ve been hiding.
He storms out of the restaurant without another word.

Scene 5 – INSIDE THE RESTAURANT

BETHANY
Did someone just leave?
MATT
Probably someone in a hurry.
Neither of them realizes Larry has witnessed everything.

Scene 6 – RESTAURANT PARKING LOT

Larry paces beside his car, overwhelmed with anger and betrayal.
LARRY
I trusted both of you.

Scene 7 – RESTAURANT EXIT

BETHANY
I’ll pay you back.
Every dollar.
MATT
Take care of yourself first.
Money can wait.
Health can’t.
They share a brief hug before walking away in opposite directions.

Scene 8 – LARRY’S HOUSE

Larry ignores Bethany’s phone calls, convinced she has betrayed him.
LARRY
No…
Not tonight.

Scene 9 – BETHANY’S APARTMENT

Bethany hides the envelope in a drawer and sends Larry one final message.
“Can we talk tonight? I really need to tell you something important.”
The message remains unread.

Final Scene – CITY STREET – NIGHT

Rain falls over the empty streets as Larry drives away, believing the worst. Bethany watches the same rain from her apartment window, unaware of the misunderstanding.
