Part 2: Bethany’s Unexpected Reaction
The house was unusually quiet that afternoon. Larry was sitting at the dining table, slowly drinking his coffee while thinking about everything that had happened over the past few weeks. Brooke was nearby, scrolling through her phone, trying to stay out of everyone’s business for once.
Things between Larry and Bethany had finally started to calm down. Bethany was still recovering and trying to adjust to all the changes happening in her life. Their marriage was not perfect, but for the first time in a long time, they had been having more honest conversations.
Larry hoped the peace would last.
Then suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
Larry looked toward Brooke.
“Are you expecting somebody?” he asked.
Brooke shook her head.
“Nope. Not me.”
Larry stood up and walked toward the door. When he opened it, his expression immediately changed.
Standing there was Sharra.
“Hey, Larry!” Sharra said with a big smile.
Larry looked slightly surprised.
“Sharra? What are you doing here?”
Sharra walked inside confidently.
“I came to talk to you and Brooke. I have something important to discuss.”
Brooke immediately looked up from her phone.
“Uh-oh,” Brooke said. “Whenever somebody says they have something important to discuss, drama usually follows.”
Sharra laughed.
“No drama today. Actually, I have a good idea.”
Larry slowly returned to his chair.
“All right. What kind of idea?”
Sharra sat down across from Larry and looked at both him and Brooke.
“I think the three of us should go somewhere together.”
Larry paused.
“The three of us?”
“Yeah,” Sharra replied. “Me, you, and Brooke. Just a little trip. Somewhere peaceful where we can relax and get away from all the stress.”
Brooke’s eyes widened.
“Wait a minute. You’re serious?”
“Completely serious,” Sharra said.
Larry leaned back in his chair.
“And what exactly are we supposed to do on this trip?”
Sharra smiled.
“Nothing complicated. Just relax. Eat good food. Have fun. Talk. Maybe enjoy some peace for a change.”
Brooke laughed.
“Peace? With this family? You might be asking for a miracle.”
Everyone laughed for a moment.
But Larry suddenly became serious.
“You know Bethany has been talking about going away too.”
Sharra’s smile slowly faded.
“I know. But this isn’t about causing problems. I just think Brooke could use some time away, and honestly, I think we all could.”
Larry nodded slowly.
“I understand what you’re saying.”
Before anyone could continue the conversation, another sound came from the front door.
Everyone turned around.
Bethany had arrived.
She walked into the house with a calm expression. At first, she didn’t notice Sharra. But when she looked toward the dining table, she suddenly stopped.
Her eyes moved from Sharra to Larry.
Then to Brooke.
The room became completely silent.
“Oh,” Bethany said slowly. “Well… this looks interesting.”
Larry immediately stood up.
“Bethany, it’s not what you think.”
Bethany raised an eyebrow.
“I haven’t said what I think yet.”
Brooke tried not to laugh.
Sharra stood up and faced Bethany.
“Hey, Bethany. I just came by to talk to Larry and Brooke.”
Bethany looked at her.
“About what?”
Sharra hesitated for a second.
Larry closed his eyes briefly.
“Sharra was suggesting that she, Brooke, and I go on a little trip.”
Bethany stared at him.
“A trip?”
Larry nodded.
“Just an idea. Nothing has been planned.”
Bethany slowly put her bag down.
“That’s interesting.”
Larry could immediately tell by her voice that something was bothering her.
“Bethany…”
“No, Larry. It’s fine,” she said. “I’m just trying to understand something.”
She looked at Sharra.
“So you came here and decided that the three of you should go away together?”
Sharra remained calm.
“I suggested it. That’s all.”
Bethany nodded slowly.
“Right. A suggestion.”
Brooke could feel the tension building.
“Okay, everybody,” Brooke said, “let’s not turn this into something crazy.”
Bethany looked at Brooke.
“I’m not turning it into anything. I’m having a conversation.”
Larry stepped closer.
“And that’s exactly what we’re doing. Talking.”
Bethany looked directly at Larry.
“You know what’s interesting, Larry? I’ve been talking to you about taking time away together and working on our relationship.”
Larry nodded.
“I know.”
“And you told me that you needed time to think about it.”
Larry looked uncomfortable.
“Bethany, this is different.”
Bethany crossed her arms.
“Different how?”
Larry took a deep breath.
“Because this isn’t a romantic getaway. It’s just Sharra, Brooke, and me taking a break and spending some family time together.”
Bethany shook her head.
“Family time?” she repeated.
Sharra stepped forward.
“Bethany, I wasn’t trying to disrespect you. I thought Brooke might enjoy getting away from everything she’s dealing with.”
Bethany looked at Brooke, and her expression softened.
“I understand that Brooke needs peace. We all do.”
Brooke quietly nodded.
Bethany then looked back at Larry.
“But I guess I’m wondering when I get my turn.”
Larry’s expression changed.
Bethany continued.
“I’ve been trying. I’ve been healing. I’ve been trying to communicate with you differently. I’ve been trying to give us another chance.”
The room became quiet again.
“And every time I bring up us spending time together, there’s always something else that needs to happen first.”
Larry looked down.
Bethany took a deep breath.
“But now someone else comes into the house and suggests a trip, and suddenly we’re discussing destinations.”
Brooke whispered, “Oh, Lord…”
Larry finally looked at Bethany.
“You’re right.”
Everyone looked surprised.
Larry continued.
“I didn’t look at it that way. But you’re right. I told you I needed time to think about our trip, and I should have taken your feelings more seriously.”
Bethany’s expression changed slightly.
She had expected an argument.
Instead, Larry was listening.
“So what are you saying?” she asked.
Larry smiled.
“I’m saying maybe we should stop talking about taking a trip someday and actually start planning one.”
Bethany looked shocked.
“Really?”
“Really,” Larry said.
Sharra smiled.
“Well, look at that. Maybe everybody needs a trip.”
Brooke laughed.
“At this point, I think this entire family needs to move to another planet.”
Everyone laughed.
Bethany looked at Larry one more time.
“I’m serious, Larry. I don’t want this to just be another conversation.”
Larry nodded.
“It won’t be.”
Bethany smiled slightly.
But as Sharra picked up her bag and prepared to leave, Bethany watched her carefully.
Something still didn’t feel completely settled.
Sharra turned toward the door.
“Think about my idea, Larry. The three of us could still have a great trip.”
Bethany’s smile immediately disappeared.
Larry looked at Sharra.
Brooke slowly covered her face with her hands.
“And there it is,” Brooke whispered.
Bethany turned toward Larry.
“Oh, we’re definitely going to revisit this conversation later.”
Larry sighed.
“I knew it was too quiet for too long.”
As Sharra walked out of the house, Bethany and Larry stared at each other.
The question was no longer just about a trip.
It was about trust, family, relationships, and whether Larry and Bethany could truly move forward without allowing the past to keep pulling them back.
And judging by Bethany’s expression, the next conversation was going to be one Larry would never forget.
