BETHANY & LARRY — ESCAPING THE CHAOS

SCENE 1 — LARRY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — EVENING

The house is unusually quiet.

For the first time in days, there are no loud arguments echoing through the rooms.

But the silence does not feel peaceful.

It feels heavy.

Larry stands near the window, staring outside.

Bethany sits on the couch, exhausted from everything that has happened.

She slowly looks around the room.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

The same house where every conversation seems to turn into another argument.

Bethany takes a deep breath.

BETHANY

I can’t do this anymore.

Larry turns toward her.

LARRY

Do what?

Bethany looks at him, her eyes tired.

BETHANY

Wake up every morning wondering who’s going to be angry next.

Every conversation turns into a fight. Every problem becomes somebody’s fault.

Larry slowly sits beside her.

LARRY

You’re right.

Bethany looks surprised.

BETHANY

You actually agree with me?

Larry gives a tired smile.

LARRY

For once, I think we both need the same thing.

Bethany waits.

BETHANY

Peace?

Larry nods.

LARRY

Peace.

A long silence follows.

SCENE 2 — THE DECISION

Larry stands and walks toward the hallway.

Bethany watches him.

BETHANY

Where are you going?

Larry stops.

He looks back at her.

LARRY

Packing a bag.

Bethany’s eyes widen.

BETHANY

You’re serious?

LARRY

Completely.

He walks into the bedroom.

Bethany slowly gets up and follows him.

Inside the bedroom, Larry opens a closet and pulls out a travel bag.

Bethany stands in the doorway.

BETHANY

So we’re really leaving?

Larry places a few clothes inside the bag.

LARRY

Just for a little while.

BETHANY

And what happens when we come back?

Larry stops packing.

He looks at her.

LARRY

Maybe things will look different after we get some distance.

Bethany looks down.

BETHANY

I just want one day where nobody is accusing anybody.

Larry closes the bag.

LARRY

Then let’s give ourselves that day.

Bethany nods.

She walks to her room.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY’S ROOM — NIGHT

Bethany opens her closet.

She pulls out a few outfits and places them inside a small suitcase.

Her hands move quickly.

Then she stops.

She looks at an old family photograph sitting on her dresser.

For a moment, she remembers happier days.

A small smile appears.

Then it fades.

BETHANY

Maybe getting away is exactly what we need.

She closes the suitcase.

SCENE 4 — LIVING ROOM — LATER

Larry comes downstairs carrying his bag.

Bethany follows with hers.

They place their bags near the front door.

Neither of them speaks.

They simply look around.

The house feels different now.

Not because anything has changed.

Because they have finally decided to step away from it.

Larry picks up his keys.

LARRY

Ready?

Bethany looks toward the staircase.

She takes a deep breath.

BETHANY

Yeah.

Then she looks at Larry.

BETHANY

But I don’t want to talk about the family while we’re gone.

LARRY

Deal.

BETHANY

No accusations.

LARRY

None.

BETHANY

No arguing.

Larry raises his hand.

LARRY

I promise.

Bethany finally smiles.

SCENE 5 — FRONT DOOR — NIGHT

Larry opens the door.

Cool night air rushes inside.

Bethany steps outside.

She closes her eyes for a moment and takes a deep breath.

The tension on her face begins to disappear.

Larry locks the door behind them.

LARRY

Feels good already.

Bethany smiles.

BETHANY

It does.

They walk toward the car.

Larry places their bags in the trunk.

Bethany looks back at the house one last time.

The windows glow warmly in the darkness.

But she does not look afraid anymore.

BETHANY

We needed this.

Larry closes the trunk.

LARRY

We really did.

SCENE 6 — INSIDE THE CAR — NIGHT

Larry starts the engine.

Bethany sits in the passenger seat.

For several seconds, neither speaks.

The radio plays softly.

Larry pulls away from the house.

Bethany watches the house disappear behind them.

BETHANY

Do you think they’ll be angry that we left?

Larry keeps his eyes on the road.

LARRY

Probably.

Bethany laughs softly.

BETHANY

At least we’re not there to hear it.

Larry laughs.

The tension finally breaks.

SCENE 7 — THE ROAD — NIGHT

The city lights pass by the windows.

Bethany leans her head against the seat.

For the first time in a long time, she looks relaxed.

Larry glances at her.

LARRY

Where do you want to go?

Bethany thinks for a moment.

BETHANY

Somewhere quiet.

Larry nods.

LARRY

Quiet sounds perfect.

Bethany smiles.

BETHANY

No family drama.

LARRY

No arguments.

BETHANY

No blaming.

LARRY

Just us.

Bethany looks out the window.

BETHANY

Maybe that’s what we’ve been missing.

Larry looks at her.

LARRY

What?

BETHANY

A chance to breathe.

Larry smiles.

LARRY

Then tonight, we breathe.

SCENE 8 — HOTEL — LATE NIGHT

The car pulls into a quiet hotel parking lot.

Larry and Bethany step out.

They grab their bags.

There is no rush.

No shouting.

No accusations.

Just silence.

They walk toward the entrance together.

Bethany looks at Larry.

BETHANY

Thank you.

Larry looks confused.

LARRY

For what?

BETHANY

For choosing to leave with me instead of staying in all that chaos.

Larry smiles.

LARRY

Sometimes walking away isn’t giving up.

Sometimes it’s choosing yourself.

Bethany nods.

They enter the hotel.

SCENE 9 — HOTEL ROOM — NIGHT

Bethany places her suitcase on the floor.

Larry drops his bag beside the bed.

Bethany walks toward the window.

Outside, the city shines beneath the night sky.

Larry joins her.

They stand quietly.

BETHANY

Tomorrow, we can figure everything out.

Larry nods.

LARRY

Tomorrow.

Bethany smiles.

BETHANY

Tonight?

Larry looks at her.

LARRY

Tonight, we forget everything.

Bethany laughs softly.

BETHANY

Deal.

They sit together near the window.

For the first time in days, neither of them feels the need to defend themselves.

No arguments.

No accusations.

No family war.

Just two people trying to find peace.

FADE OUT.
