BROOKE AND BETHANY — A FAMILY WAR

SCENE 1 — THE LIVING ROOM — EVENING

The house is unusually quiet.

Bethany stands near the window, staring outside. Her face is tense, but she tries to remain calm.

Brooke suddenly walks into the room, visibly furious.

She stops in front of Bethany.

BROOKE
Why did you do it?

Bethany slowly turns around.

BETHANY
Do what?

Brooke takes a step closer, her anger growing.

BROOKE
Don’t pretend you don’t know.
You handed my grandma over to the police.
Why?

Bethany looks away for a moment.

BETHANY
Because I had no other choice.

Brooke shakes her head in disbelief.

BROOKE
No other choice?
She’s my grandma, Bethany!
You had no right to do that!

Bethany’s expression hardens.

BETHANY
I did what I believed was necessary.

Brooke clenches her fists.

BROOKE
Necessary?
You destroyed my family!
You knew what she meant to me!

Bethany takes a breath, trying not to lose her temper.

BETHANY
And you don’t know what I’ve been dealing with.
You only see your side of the story.

BROOKE
Because you’re the one who called the police!

Bethany looks directly into Brooke’s eyes.

BETHANY
Yes.
I did.

The admission leaves Brooke stunned.

For a moment, neither woman speaks.

Then Brooke’s anger returns.

BROOKE
How could you?

Bethany turns away.

BETHANY
I’m not discussing this anymore.

BROOKE
You’re going to answer me!

Bethany suddenly turns around.

BETHANY
Stay away from me.
And get out of my room.
Right now.

Brooke stares at her.

BROOKE
Excuse me?

BETHANY
You heard me.
Leave.

Bethany points toward the hallway.

BETHANY
Get out of my room and stay away from me.

Brooke slowly steps backward.

Her eyes fill with anger and disbelief.

BROOKE
This isn’t over.

She turns and walks away.

Bethany watches her disappear down the hallway.

Her expression reveals that she knows something terrible may happen next.

SCENE 2 — THE HALLWAY — LATER THAT NIGHT

The house has gone silent.

Everyone is asleep.

The hallway is dark except for a faint light coming from the living room.

Brooke quietly opens her bedroom door.

She looks toward Bethany’s room.

Her face is still filled with anger.

She walks down the hallway.

Every step is slow and deliberate.

Brooke reaches Bethany’s door.

She pauses.

Then she quietly opens it.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY’S ROOM — NIGHT

Bethany is asleep.

Brooke stands beside the bed, staring at her.

For several seconds, she says nothing.

Her anger begins to overwhelm her.

Bethany suddenly wakes up.

She looks frightened when she sees Brooke standing there.

BETHANY
Brooke?
What are you doing here?

Brooke doesn’t answer.

She moves closer.

BETHANY
Brooke, please leave.

Brooke’s voice is cold.

BROOKE
You took my grandma away from me.

Bethany sits up.

BETHANY
I told you, I had a reason.

BROOKE
I don’t care about your reason!
You destroyed everything!

Bethany tries to get out of bed.

BETHANY
I’m not fighting with you.

Brooke grabs Bethany during the struggle.

Bethany immediately tries to pull away.

BETHANY
Brooke, stop!
You’re scaring me!

Brooke’s anger reaches a dangerous point.

For a moment, she attempts to restrain Bethany by the neck.

Bethany struggles to free herself.

BETHANY
Let me go!

Brooke refuses to listen.

BROOKE
You should have thought about that before you called the police!

Bethany manages to push against Brooke and create some distance.

She gasps for breath and looks terrified.

BETHANY
What are you doing?
This isn’t going to bring your grandma back!

Those words make Brooke freeze.

Her anger is suddenly mixed with shock.

Bethany backs away toward the door.

BETHANY
You need to stop.
Please.

Brooke looks at her hands.

The reality of what she almost did begins to sink in.

She slowly steps backward.

SCENE 4 — THE HALLWAY — CONTINUOUS

Bethany rushes out of the room.

She leans against the wall, trying to calm herself.

Brooke remains inside the bedroom.

Neither woman speaks.

The silence is heavier than any argument.

Bethany finally looks back toward Brooke.

BETHANY
You could have killed me.

Brooke looks down.

Her anger has disappeared, replaced by confusion and regret.

BROOKE
I didn’t…

Bethany interrupts her.

BETHANY
You did.

Brooke’s eyes fill with tears.

BROOKE
I was angry.

BETHANY
Being angry doesn’t give you the right to hurt someone.

Brooke has no answer.

She slowly walks toward the hallway.

BROOKE
I just wanted my grandma back.

Bethany looks at her sadly.

BETHANY
And I never wanted any of this to happen.

SCENE 5 — LIVING ROOM — EARLY MORNING

The first light of morning enters through the windows.

The house remains silent.

Brooke sits alone on the couch, staring at the floor.

She remembers the argument.

She remembers Bethany’s frightened face.

Her anger has turned into regret.

Bethany enters the room.

The two women look at each other.

For several seconds, neither speaks.

Finally, Brooke stands.

BROOKE
I’m sorry.

Bethany doesn’t immediately respond.

BROOKE
I was furious.
I wasn’t thinking clearly.

Bethany slowly approaches.

BETHANY
What happened last night can never happen again.

Brooke nods.

BROOKE
I know.

Bethany looks toward the window.

BETHANY
Your grandma’s situation has to be handled the right way.
Not with revenge.

Brooke wipes away a tear.

BROOKE
Then tell me the truth.
Why did you call the police?

Bethany looks at Brooke.

There is hesitation in her eyes.

BETHANY
Because there is something you don’t know.

Brooke’s expression changes.

BROOKE
What?

Bethany takes a deep breath.

BETHANY
Your grandma’s arrest wasn’t the whole story.

Brooke stares at her.

BROOKE
What are you talking about?

Bethany looks toward the hallway, making sure no one else is awake.

BETHANY
There are things I’ve been hiding.
And if I tell you everything…
our family may never be the same again.

Brooke stands completely still.

The revelation leaves her speechless.

BROOKE
Then tell me.

Bethany looks into her eyes.

BETHANY
Not here.
Not now.
But soon.

Brooke nods slowly.

The two women stand in silence as the morning light fills the room.

Their family has been torn apart by anger, secrets, and betrayal.

And now, the truth may be even more dangerous than the fight that happened in the darkness.
