THE SECRET IS EXPOSED

Rain taps softly against the windows.

SCENE 1 — LARRY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — EVENING

LARRY sits on the sofa, staring at his phone. His expression is tense. He has been trying to understand why everyone suddenly seems to know about Sharra’s mother.

The front door opens.

MR. NEWBURGER walks inside quickly. His face is serious.

Larry looks up.

LARRY
What happened? You look like something is wrong.

Mr. Newburger closes the door behind him and walks toward Larry.

MR. NEWBURGER
Larry, we have a serious problem.

Larry immediately stands.

LARRY
What kind of problem?

Mr. Newburger takes a deep breath.

MR. NEWBURGER
Everyone knows.

Larry freezes.

LARRY
Everyone knows what?

MR. NEWBURGER
They know about Sharra’s mother.

Larry’s face changes.

LARRY
How did they find out?

Mr. Newburger looks directly at him.

MR. NEWBURGER
Bethany told them.

Larry slowly sits back down.

LARRY
Bethany?

MR. NEWBURGER
Yes. She told people that she was the one who had Sharra’s mother turned over to the police.

Larry looks shocked.

LARRY
She admitted that?

MR. NEWBURGER
Not only did she admit it, Larry… she let the whole secret come out.

Larry runs a hand across his face.

LARRY
This is getting worse every minute.

Mr. Newburger nods.

MR. NEWBURGER
And now Sharra’s mother is still at the police station.

Larry looks toward the door.

LARRY
Then we need to go there.

MR. NEWBURGER
That is exactly why I came.

Larry grabs his jacket.

LARRY
Let’s go.

SCENE 2 — LARRY’S HOUSE — DRIVEWAY — NIGHT

The rain has become heavier.

Larry and Mr. Newburger hurry toward the car.

Larry opens the passenger door while Mr. Newburger gets behind the wheel.

The engine starts.

For a moment, neither man speaks.

LARRY
I still can’t believe Bethany did this.

MR. NEWBURGER
The truth was going to come out eventually.

LARRY
But she didn’t have to expose everything like this.

Mr. Newburger keeps his eyes on the road.

MR. NEWBURGER
Maybe she thought she was doing the right thing.

Larry shakes his head.

LARRY
Whatever she thought, Sharra’s mother is the one paying the price.

The car disappears into the rainy night.

SCENE 3 — POLICE STATION — NIGHT

A police station stands beneath bright exterior lights.

Larry and Mr. Newburger enter through the front doors.

Inside, the atmosphere is quiet and serious.

They approach the front desk.

MR. NEWBURGER
We’re here about Sharra’s mother.

The officer behind the desk looks at them.

OFFICER
She’s still here.

Larry steps forward.

LARRY
Can we speak with her?

The officer hesitates.

OFFICER
You’ll have to wait.

Mr. Newburger looks at Larry.

MR. NEWBURGER
We’ll wait.

Minutes pass.

Finally, an officer returns and leads them toward a private room.

Sharra’s mother is sitting inside.

She looks exhausted and worried.

Larry stops when he sees her.

LARRY
Are you okay?

Sharra’s mother looks at him with sadness.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
How could I be okay?

Larry lowers his eyes.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Everyone knows now.

LARRY
I’m sorry.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Who told them?

Larry remains silent.

Mr. Newburger steps forward.

MR. NEWBURGER
Bethany.

Sharra’s mother looks shocked.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Bethany?

Mr. Newburger nods.

MR. NEWBURGER
She told people that she was responsible for bringing you here.

Sharra’s mother looks away.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
I never thought she would expose me like this.

Larry looks at Mr. Newburger.

LARRY
We can’t leave her here without trying to help.

SCENE 4 — POLICE STATION — HALLWAY — NIGHT

Larry and Mr. Newburger step outside the room.

Larry looks frustrated.

LARRY
There has to be something we can do.

MR. NEWBURGER
We need to understand exactly why she was brought here before we make any decision.

LARRY
And if Bethany caused all of this?

Mr. Newburger looks at him.

MR. NEWBURGER
Then Bethany will have to answer for what she did.

Larry nods.

LARRY
Let’s make sure Sharra’s mother gets a fair chance to explain herself.

They turn back toward the room.

SCENE 5 — POLICE STATION — INTERVIEW ROOM — LATER

The officer enters and places some paperwork on the table.

Larry watches carefully.

OFFICER
We still need clarification before we can determine the next step.

Mr. Newburger speaks calmly.

MR. NEWBURGER
She deserves the opportunity to tell her side of the story.

The officer looks at him.

OFFICER
She will have that opportunity.

Sharra’s mother looks toward Larry.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Larry, I never wanted you involved in this.

LARRY
You’re not alone anymore.

She becomes emotional.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
I don’t understand why Bethany would do this to me.

Larry doesn’t answer.

Mr. Newburger looks thoughtful.

MR. NEWBURGER
Sometimes people reveal secrets because they believe they are protecting themselves.

Larry looks at him.

LARRY
But secrets have consequences.

The room becomes silent.

SCENE 6 — POLICE STATION — FRONT DESK — LATER

After a long discussion, Mr. Newburger approaches the officer again.

MR. NEWBURGER
Is she being held here permanently?

OFFICER
Not at this point. We are still reviewing the situation.

Mr. Newburger turns toward Larry.

Larry immediately understands.

LARRY
So she can leave?

OFFICER
For now, yes, provided the necessary conditions are met.

Larry exhales with relief.

Mr. Newburger walks back toward Sharra’s mother.

MR. NEWBURGER
We’re taking you with us.

Sharra’s mother looks surprised.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
You came back for me?

LARRY
We weren’t going to leave you here alone.

She slowly stands.

SCENE 7 — POLICE STATION — EXIT — NIGHT

The doors open.

Larry, Mr. Newburger, and Sharra’s mother step outside.

The rain has slowed.

Sharra’s mother looks back at the police station.

Her eyes are filled with uncertainty.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
This isn’t over, is it?

Larry shakes his head.

LARRY
No. It isn’t.

Mr. Newburger looks at Larry.

MR. NEWBURGER
And now we need to confront Bethany.

Larry’s expression becomes serious.

LARRY
She needs to explain everything.

Sharra’s mother looks between them.

SHARRA’S MOTHER
Please don’t let this destroy everyone.

Larry looks toward the dark road.

LARRY
The secret is already out.

He pauses.

LARRY
Now we have to deal with the truth.

SCENE 8 — LARRY’S CAR — NIGHT

The three get inside the car.

Mr. Newburger starts the engine.

Larry looks through the window.

LARRY
Bethany thought she could control the story.

Mr. Newburger glances at him.

MR. NEWBURGER
But once a secret is revealed, nobody controls what happens next.

Larry nods slowly.

The car drives away from the police station.

Behind them, the station lights remain visible through the rain.

Sharra’s mother looks down silently.

Larry watches the road ahead.

His phone suddenly rings.

He looks at the screen.

The caller’s name is—

BETHANY.

Larry’s expression hardens.

He doesn’t answer.

The phone continues ringing.

MR. NEWBURGER
Are you going to answer?

Larry slowly turns the phone face down.

LARRY
Not yet.

The ringing stops.

Silence fills the car.

Larry looks at Mr. Newburger.

LARRY
First, we find out the whole truth.

Mr. Newburger nods.

The car disappears into the darkness.

FADE OUT.
