When Larry Changed His Mind

It started with a conversation that seemed simple at first. Bethany had been thinking about something important for a while, and she finally decided it was time to talk to Larry about it. She expected him to listen, maybe ask a few questions, and eventually agree with her.

But Larry’s reaction was not what she expected.

Bethany tried to explain why the decision mattered so much to her. She wanted Larry to understand that this was not just a small plan that could be forgotten the next morning. It was something she had been thinking about seriously, and she wanted him beside her when the time came.

Larry listened quietly at first. Then the conversation became more emotional. Their voices grew louder, and before long, Bethany and Larry were arguing.

Bethany felt that Larry was not taking her feelings seriously. Larry, meanwhile, felt like too much pressure was being placed on him. Neither of them wanted to back down, and the disagreement quickly became much bigger than either of them had expected.

For a moment, it seemed like the plan might never happen.

Then Larry finally took a breath and looked at Bethany.

After everything they had said to each other, he surprised her by changing his attitude. “Fine. We’ll go.”

Bethany was relieved. She had expected another argument, but instead Larry seemed ready to move forward. The tension between them slowly disappeared, and for the first time that day, Bethany felt like they were finally on the same page.

But that feeling would not last.

A few days passed. Bethany assumed Larry had accepted the decision and that everything was settled. She began preparing herself for the day they would have to leave.

Then Larry brought it up again.

This time, his words were completely different.

“I don’t think I want to go anymore.”

Bethany was stunned.

She reminded him that he had already agreed. They had argued about it, talked it through, and Larry had eventually said yes. So why was he suddenly changing his mind?

Larry tried to explain that he had been thinking about everything during those few days. The more he thought about it, the more uncomfortable he became. He was no longer sure that going was the right choice for him.

Bethany could hardly believe what she was hearing.

She had trusted his answer. She thought their argument had finally ended with a decision they could both accept. Now, just when she believed everything was settled, Larry was pulling away again.

The room became quiet.

Bethany looked at Larry, trying to understand what had changed inside his mind. Was he really refusing to go, or was there something else he wasn’t telling her?

Larry didn’t give her the answer she wanted.

And that left Bethany wondering one thing: when the actual day finally arrived, would Larry keep his promise—or would he walk away at the very last moment?
