Was It Just a Dream, or the Truth Hidden in Larry’s Heart?

A story of love, loss, regret, and hidden emotions

Bethany had never imagined that a simple night of sleep could leave her questioning everything she believed about the people around her. After a long and exhausting day, she finally fell asleep, unaware that her mind was about to take her into a world that felt far too real.

In her dream, Bethany found herself standing in a strange and unfamiliar place. Everything around her felt quiet, yet there was a crowd of people gathered nearby. Bethany looked around, confused, until she suddenly realized something terrifying.

She was watching her own funeral.

Bethany stood frozen as she looked at everyone around her. The sight was impossible to understand. People were talking, smiling, and acting as though something wonderful had happened. Instead of seeing sadness, she saw happiness on their faces.

Bethany could not believe what she was seeing.

Among the crowd was Sharaa, Brooke’s biological mother. Sharaa looked completely comfortable and surprisingly happy. There was no sadness on her face. In fact, she seemed relieved by Bethany’s death.

Bethany stared at her in disbelief. She had expected that some people might not care about her, but seeing people actually celebrating her death made her heart sink.

Then Bethany noticed someone standing away from everyone else.

It was Larry.

Unlike the others, Larry was completely broken. He stood near Bethany’s photograph, unable to control his emotions. His eyes were filled with tears, and his face showed a level of pain Bethany had never expected to see.

Bethany watched him carefully.

For so long, she had believed that Larry had become distant and that he might not even care if she disappeared from his life. She had convinced herself that he would probably move on without looking back.

But now, in this strange dream, she was seeing something completely different.

Larry was grieving for her.

Beside him stood Brooke. Brooke was also crying, devastated by the loss of Bethany. Although Bethany was her second mother, Brooke had developed a meaningful bond with her. Seeing Brooke so heartbroken made Bethany emotional.

Larry looked at Brooke and tried to comfort her, but he was struggling to hold himself together.

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to do this without her,” Larry said through his tears.
“She was always there for us, Dad,” Brooke replied. “I don’t know how things are supposed to feel normal anymore.”

Bethany stood only a few steps away, but neither Larry nor Brooke could see her. She wanted to reach out to them. She wanted to tell them that she was still there. But no matter how hard she tried, her voice would not come out.

Then Larry looked at Bethany’s photograph again.

“I should have told her how much she meant to me. I thought there would always be more time.”

Those words completely shattered Bethany. She had never expected Larry to say something like that.

For the first time, she began questioning all the assumptions she had made about him. Maybe Larry had never stopped caring. Maybe his silence, arguments, and distance had hidden feelings that he never knew how to express.

But while Larry and Brooke were grieving, Sharaa remained happy.

She walked toward Larry and spoke calmly.

“You have to accept that she is gone. Now you can finally move forward with your life.”

Larry immediately turned toward Sharaa, anger replacing the sadness in his eyes.

“Don’t say that.”

Sharaa looked surprised.

“You may be happy that she’s gone, but I’m not. Bethany was a part of my life, and no one can simply replace her.”

Bethany stared at Larry in shock. Those words were exactly what she had never expected to hear.

Larry lowered his head, trying to hide his tears.

“I wish I had appreciated her more while she was here.”

Bethany felt tears running down her own face. She finally understood that sometimes people hide their deepest emotions until it is too late. And perhaps Larry had been doing exactly that.

Suddenly, everything around Bethany began to change. The people disappeared. The funeral vanished. Larry’s voice became distant. Bethany tried to hold onto the moment, desperate to understand what the dream meant.

Then she suddenly woke up.

Bethany sat upright in bed, breathing heavily. She looked around the room and realized that everything had been a dream.

But the emotions felt real.

She wiped the tears from her face and looked toward Larry, who was sleeping peacefully nearby.

Bethany remained silent as she watched him. For the first time, she wondered whether she had misunderstood Larry all along.

The dream had shown her something she had refused to believe: Larry might still love her deeply, even if he had never been able to express it properly.

“Was it just a dream, or was it the truth hidden in Larry’s heart?”

She knew she could not simply forget what she had seen. And when morning came, Bethany knew one thing for certain.

She needed to find out what Larry truly felt before it was too late.
