Isaiah’s House — Late Afternoon
The neighborhood is quiet. A sleek new car turns onto Isaiah’s street and pulls up near his house. Behind the wheel is Brooke. She takes a deep breath and looks toward the house — a small, hopeful smile crossing her face.
She turns off the engine, grabs her bag, and steps out. Her steps up the driveway are calm, her expression hopeful. She has no idea what she’s about to see.
BROOKE: I hope Isaiah is home.
She continues toward the house — then suddenly stops. Her smile disappears. Her eyes fix on something in the driveway.
Isaiah is standing there. Beside him is his new girlfriend, standing close, holding hands. Brooke freezes. The sound of the neighborhood seems to disappear. Her expression slowly shifts from confusion to heartbreak.
BROOKE (barely audible): Isaiah…?
Isaiah turns his head, eyes widening.
ISAIAH: Brooke?
Brooke says nothing. She looks down at their hands, then back at Isaiah, her eyes filling with tears. The new car she arrived in suddenly means nothing to her.
ISAIAH: Brooke, wait.
Brooke takes a small step backward, shaking her head.
BROOKE: I… I didn’t know.
Isaiah lets go of his girlfriend’s hand and steps toward her.
ISAIAH: Brooke, please let me explain.
Brooke wipes her eyes quickly, but more tears fall.
BROOKE: Explain what?
Isaiah stops, struggling to find the right words. Brooke looks at him with disappointment.
BROOKE: I came here to see you. I thought maybe we could talk.
Isaiah looks down. His silence hurts her even more. She steps back again.
BROOKE: But I guess I was too late.
The Driveway
The atmosphere becomes painfully quiet. Isaiah’s girlfriend looks uncomfortable and steps back, giving them space. Brooke glances at her, then back at Isaiah.
BROOKE: Is she your girlfriend?
ISAIAH: Brooke…
BROOKE: Just answer me.
Isaiah hesitates. That hesitation tells Brooke everything.
ISAIAH: Yes.
Brooke looks away, trying to hold herself together. Then she quietly laughs through her tears.
BROOKE: Wow.
ISAIAH: I didn’t want you to find out like this.
BROOKE: But you knew I was coming. You knew I still cared about you. And you still let me walk into this.
ISAIAH: I never wanted to hurt you.
BROOKE: But you did.
Silence. Brooke looks at the house, then back at the new car parked behind her. She had arrived feeling confident and hopeful. Now she feels completely different.
Brooke Breaks Down
Brooke slowly walks away from the driveway, trying to keep her composure. After a few steps, she stops and covers her face with her hands. The tears finally come freely.
ISAIAH: Brooke, please don’t leave like this.
Brooke turns around, face covered in tears.
BROOKE: What do you want me to do? Stand here and pretend I’m okay?
Isaiah looks down. Brooke shakes her head.
BROOKE: I can’t.
She turns away again. Isaiah steps forward.
ISAIAH: Brooke, I’m sorry.
Brooke stops, not turning around.
BROOKE: I’m sorry too.
Isaiah looks confused. Brooke finally turns around.
BROOKE: I’m sorry I believed things were still the same between us.
Her words leave Isaiah speechless. Brooke wipes her face one more time.
BROOKE: I really thought you were waiting for me.
ISAIAH: I never meant for this to happen.
BROOKE: But it did.
Goodbye
She turns around and walks toward her car. Isaiah watches silently. The new girlfriend remains beside him, also uncomfortable with what has happened.
Brooke reaches her car, opens the door, and pauses before getting inside. She looks back at Isaiah’s house one final time, her eyes still filled with tears.
BROOKE: Goodbye, Isaiah.
She gets in. The door closes. The engine starts. Isaiah watches as Brooke slowly drives away.
Inside the car, Brooke tries to stay calm — but the moment she turns onto the street, her emotions overwhelm her again. She pulls over safely and takes a deep breath, tears rolling down her cheeks, staring through the windshield, trying to understand how everything changed so quickly.
Isaiah’s Driveway
Isaiah remains standing in the driveway, watching her car disappear into the distance, his expression filled with regret.
NEW GIRLFRIEND: Are you okay?
Isaiah doesn’t answer immediately, still staring down the road.
ISAIAH: No.
A long silence follows. Isaiah realizes Brooke didn’t just leave his driveway — she left carrying a heartbreak he can no longer take back.
Brooke’s Car
Brooke drives quietly, the streets passing by outside her window. She looks down at the steering wheel. Her new car was supposed to represent a fresh beginning — instead, the day has become one of the most painful moments she’s experienced.
She takes another deep breath and wipes away her tears.
BROOKE: I came looking for answers…
She pauses, her voice trembling.
BROOKE: And I found the truth.
The car continues down the road. Behind her, Isaiah’s house slowly disappears from view. Brooke doesn’t look back. For the first time, she realizes that sometimes the hardest goodbye is the one you never planned to say.
Some doors close so quietly, you only hear them once you’re already gone.
