The Next Chapter: The Silent Truth
1. A Strange Silence
An unusual silence had settled over the living room.
Bethany sat on the couch, repeatedly looking at Larry. Her face carried both hope and anxiety. For several days, she had noticed that Larry no longer spoke to her the way he used to. He answered her questions, but it always felt as though there was something behind every answer—something he was desperately trying to avoid saying.
Finally, Bethany broke the silence.
“Larry… do you really think I look better than before?”
Larry looked at her for a few moments.
“You should have confidence in yourself, Bethany.”
Bethany immediately replied, “That’s not an answer. I asked if you like me more now.”
Larry took a deep breath.
“You keep asking questions when you already have the answer you want in your head.”
2. Bethany Demands the Truth
Bethany’s expression changed.
“Then just tell me the truth.”
Larry remained silent for a moment.
“The problem was never your appearance or your weight.”
Bethany stared at him in surprise.
“Then what was the problem?”
Larry lowered his eyes.
“What changed between us… wasn’t just something on the outside.”
Bethany fell silent.
At that exact moment, Brooke came downstairs. She looked at both of them and immediately realized that this wasn’t an ordinary conversation.
“What happened?” Brooke asked quietly.
“Nothing,” Bethany quickly replied.
Brooke started to walk away when Bethany called after her.
“No, Brooke… stay.”
3. Brooke Hears Everything
Brooke stopped.
Bethany looked directly at Larry.
“Today, I want the truth. No matter how difficult it is.”
Larry thought for a few seconds.
“Bethany, I don’t want to hurt you. But I can’t keep pretending that everything is fine.”
Bethany’s eyes began to fill with tears.
“So you’ve already made your decision?”
Larry didn’t answer immediately.
That silence was enough to give Bethany an answer.
“Larry… are you really staying in this house just because you feel like you’re supposed to?”
Larry slowly raised his head.
“I’ve been asking myself that question for a long time.”
Brooke stood silently, listening to everything.
4. The Phone Call
Bethany wiped her eyes. For the first time, there was exhaustion in her voice instead of anger.
“I’ve spent so much time asking you for compliments… because I was afraid that if you told me the truth, I would fall apart.”
Larry spoke gently.
“You shouldn’t measure your worth by someone else’s compliments.”
Bethany gave a bitter smile.
“Why does that make sense to me today?”
Larry replied, “Because today, we finally stopped running away from the questions.”
Suddenly, Larry’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen, and his expression immediately changed.
Brooke noticed.
“Who is it?”
Larry held the phone tightly.
“An old matter.”
Bethany looked confused.
“What matter?”
Larry remained silent.
The phone rang again. This time, Larry answered.
After hearing a few words from the other person, his expression became completely serious.
“What? Are you sure?”
5. Isaiah Is Back
Bethany and Brooke exchanged worried looks.
Larry ended the call.
“What happened?” Bethany asked.
Larry slowly looked at them.
“The person we thought had already left the city… has come back.”
The room became silent again.
Brooke’s face went pale.
“Who?”
Larry looked directly at Brooke.
“Isaiah.”
Brooke took a step backward.
Bethany stared at Larry in disbelief.
Larry placed his phone on the table.
“And I think… his return isn’t a coincidence.”
The real secret was only beginning.
