THE UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER
SCENE 1 — ISAIAH’S HOUSE — EVENING
The house is tense.
BROOKE stands near the doorway, visibly upset. ISAIAH is facing her, frustrated by the argument that has been building between them.
Brooke’s eyes are filled with anger.
Isaiah takes a breath, trying to keep his composure.
BROOKE
“You really think you can keep lying to me and expect me to just stand here?”
Isaiah shakes his head.
ISAIAH
“Brooke, you’re making this bigger than it needs to be.”
Brooke stares at him in disbelief.
BROOKE
“Bigger? After everything I found out?”
Isaiah looks away.
That reaction only makes Brooke angrier.
She steps closer.
BROOKE
“Look me in my eyes and tell me you’re telling the truth.”
Isaiah remains silent.
Brooke’s frustration reaches its limit.
She slaps Isaiah once across the face.
Isaiah freezes.
For a moment, neither of them says anything.
His expression changes from shock to anger.
ISAIAH
“Brooke!”
Brooke immediately turns toward the door.
BROOKE
“I’m done talking.”
She walks out of the house.
The door closes behind her.
Isaiah stands there, staring at the door.
His jaw tightens.
ISAIAH
“She really just did that…”
He takes a deep breath, still angry.
But instead of following Brooke, Isaiah grabs his phone and heads outside.
SCENE 2 — OUTSIDE — LATER THAT EVENING
Brooke is already gone.
Isaiah walks down the sidewalk, still thinking about the argument.
His anger slowly turns into frustration.
He checks his phone.
After a moment, he makes a decision.
Isaiah heads toward another location.
SCENE 3 — SMALL PARKING AREA — NIGHT
MARIAH is standing near her car.
She looks surprised when she sees Isaiah approaching.
MARIAH
“Isaiah? What are you doing here?”
Isaiah stops a few feet away.
He looks irritated and distracted.
ISAIAH
“I needed to get out of the house.”
Mariah studies his expression.
MARIAH
“Did something happen?”
Isaiah hesitates.
ISAIAH
“Brooke and I had another argument.”
Mariah raises an eyebrow.
MARIAH
“About me?”
Isaiah doesn’t answer immediately.
His silence says enough.
Mariah looks uncomfortable.
MARIAH
“Isaiah, maybe you shouldn’t be here.”
Isaiah looks at her.
ISAIAH
“I just needed somebody to talk to.”
Mariah crosses her arms.
MARIAH
“You know how this looks.”
Isaiah sighs.
ISAIAH
“I know.”
They remain standing there, talking quietly.
Neither of them notices the car approaching from the other side of the street.
SCENE 4 — THE PARKING AREA — MOMENTS LATER
A car pulls up nearby.
Brooke steps out.
She had been on her way home when she noticed Isaiah’s location.
Her expression changes when she sees him.
She stops walking.
Across the parking area, Isaiah is standing with Mariah.
Brooke’s eyes widen.
Her anger returns instantly.
BROOKE
“Isaiah?”
Isaiah hears her voice.
He turns around.
His eyes widen when he realizes Brooke is standing there.
Mariah also turns.
Brooke slowly walks toward them.
BROOKE
“So this is where you went?”
Isaiah doesn’t know what to say.
ISAIAH
“Brooke…”
Brooke raises her hand.
BROOKE
“Don’t.”
Isaiah takes a nervous breath.
ISAIAH
“It’s not what you think.”
Brooke lets out a short, disbelieving laugh.
BROOKE
“That’s always your answer.”
Mariah looks between them.
MARIAH
“Brooke, we were just talking.”
Brooke turns toward Mariah.
BROOKE
“I wasn’t talking to you.”
Mariah becomes quiet.
Isaiah steps forward.
ISAIAH
“Brooke, calm down.”
Brooke immediately looks at him.
BROOKE
“You’re telling me to calm down after I find you here with her?”
Isaiah looks nervous.
SCENE 5 — THE CONFRONTATION
Brooke stops directly in front of Isaiah.
BROOKE
“Didn’t you just tell me you needed space?”
Isaiah nods slightly.
ISAIAH
“Yes.”
BROOKE
“And your idea of space was coming here to see Mariah?”
Isaiah struggles to answer.
ISAIAH
“I was angry.”
Brooke shakes her head.
BROOKE
“So was I.”
Isaiah looks down.
BROOKE
“But I went home.”
She points toward Mariah.
BROOKE
“You came here.”
Mariah steps back, realizing the situation is becoming too tense.
MARIAH
“Maybe I should leave.”
Brooke looks at her.
BROOKE
“Maybe you should.”
Mariah walks toward her car.
Isaiah watches her leave.
Then he turns back toward Brooke.
Brooke notices.
BROOKE
“You were watching her leave?”
Isaiah quickly looks back at Brooke.
ISAIAH
“No. That’s not what I was doing.”
BROOKE
“Then what were you doing?”
Isaiah has no immediate answer.
The silence becomes heavier.
SCENE 6 — ISAIAH REALIZES BROOKE IS SERIOUS
Brooke takes another step toward Isaiah.
Isaiah instinctively steps backward.
Brooke notices.
BROOKE
“Why are you backing away from me?”
Isaiah shakes his head.
ISAIAH
“I’m not.”
BROOKE
“You look scared.”
Isaiah swallows nervously.
ISAIAH
“I’m just trying to avoid another argument.”
Brooke stares at him.
BROOKE
“You should’ve thought about that before you came here.”
Isaiah looks down.
His anger from earlier has completely disappeared.
Now he seems worried about what Brooke might say next.
Brooke folds her arms.
BROOKE
“I trusted you.”
Isaiah looks up.
ISAIAH
“Brooke…”
BROOKE
“No. Let me finish.”
She pauses.
Her voice becomes quieter.
BROOKE
“You keep giving me reasons not to trust you.”
Isaiah has nothing to say.
The parking area becomes silent.
Mariah’s car disappears down the road.
Brooke watches it for a moment before looking back at Isaiah.
BROOKE
“Now tell me the truth.”
Isaiah looks at her.
ISAIAH
“The truth about what?”
Brooke’s eyes narrow.
BROOKE
“About why you really came here.”
Isaiah takes a long breath.
He realizes there is no easy way out of the situation anymore.
ISAIAH
“I don’t know what to say.”
Brooke shakes her head.
BROOKE
“That’s exactly the problem.”
She turns away.
Isaiah watches her walk toward her car.
ISAIAH
“Brooke, wait.”
She stops but doesn’t turn around.
BROOKE
“What?”
Isaiah struggles to find the right words.
ISAIAH
“I didn’t expect you to find me here.”
Brooke slowly turns around.
BROOKE
“That isn’t an answer, Isaiah.”
Isaiah looks away.
Brooke gets into her car.
Before closing the door, she looks at him one last time.
BROOKE
“Next time, think before you make another choice you can’t explain.”
She closes the door.
Isaiah stands alone in the parking area.
He watches Brooke drive away.
For the first time that evening, Isaiah realizes how serious the situation has become.
He remains silent as the car disappears into the distance.
