The peaceful atmosphere inside Charlotte’s office vanished when the door suddenly swung open. Mr. Newburger stormed inside, his face red with anger and disbelief. His breathing was heavy, his jaw tightly clenched, and his hands trembled as he struggled to control his emotions.
Charlotte immediately stood from her chair. She had never seen him this furious. Before she could even ask what had happened, Mr. Newburger looked directly at her.
“Charlotte, I need you to hear what Larry just did.”
The seriousness in his voice made Charlotte’s expression change instantly.
2. Larry’s Cold Words
Mr. Newburger began explaining everything. He told Charlotte that he had contacted Larry because Bethany needed support, expecting Larry to show at least some compassion during such a difficult moment.
Instead, Larry had responded coldly and without hesitation.
“Come get your daughter.”
Mr. Newburger repeated the words slowly, almost as if he still could not believe he had actually heard them. His eyes filled with anger.
“That was it,” he said. “No concern. No sympathy. Nothing.”
Charlotte stared at him, stunned by the story.
3. The Ten-Thousand-Dollar Reminder
Mr. Newburger reminded Charlotte that he had personally contributed $10,000 toward Bethany’s surgery. He had done it because he believed Bethany needed help and because he expected the people closest to her to stand beside her.
“I reminded Larry about that,” Mr. Newburger said, his voice shaking with anger. “I told him I had already stepped up when she needed financial help.”
Charlotte slowly lowered herself back into her chair. Her eyes widened as she realized just how deep the conflict had become.
“And what did Larry say?” she asked quietly.
“He didn’t care.”
4. Anger Reaches the Breaking Point
Mr. Newburger slammed his palm against the desk—not to threaten anyone, but from sheer frustration. His entire body appeared tense.
“How can someone do that?” he demanded. “Bethany has been through surgery, emotional pain, fear, and uncertainty. And Larry simply tells me to take her back?”
Charlotte remained silent for several seconds. She could see that Mr. Newburger wasn’t simply angry about money. He was furious because he believed Bethany had been abandoned when she was most vulnerable.
“Maybe Larry has reached his limit,” Charlotte finally whispered.
Mr. Newburger immediately looked at her.
“Then why didn’t he say that to Bethany himself?”
5. Charlotte Begins to Break Down
Charlotte’s eyes became watery. She had known there were serious problems between Larry and Bethany, but hearing the details from Mr. Newburger made everything feel different.
“I don’t know what to say,” she admitted.
Mr. Newburger looked toward the window, trying to calm himself. His anger slowly turned into concern.
“I’m worried about my daughter,” he said. “Whatever happened between them, Bethany shouldn’t have to feel like she’s being thrown away.”
Charlotte nodded. For the first time, she began wondering whether Larry’s actions had crossed a line that could not easily be repaired.

The room fell silent. Mr. Newburger picked up his phone and stared at the screen. Charlotte noticed his expression suddenly change.
“What are you going to do?” she asked.
Mr. Newburger didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Charlotte and said, “I’m going to find out exactly what Larry plans to do next.”
Charlotte’s heart sank. She knew that meant this confrontation was not over. Whatever Larry had planned for Bethany could completely change the family’s future.

Just as Mr. Newburger reached for the door, his phone suddenly began ringing. He glanced at the screen and froze.
Charlotte noticed the name on the display but couldn’t read it from across the room.
“Who is it?” she asked nervously.

“It’s Larry.”
