Bethany Finds the Divorce Papers

A family drama, in three scenes

Int. Larry and Bethany’s House — Afternoon

The house is unusually quiet. Larry has taken Brooke to the college to complete her admission process. Bethany is home alone, moving through the kitchen and cleaning up a few things. She looks at the clock — Larry has been gone for a while. Bethany wipes her hands and walks toward the hallway.

Bethany

I wonder how long they’re going to be.

She heads toward her bedroom. As Bethany steps inside, something catches her attention — a file is sitting on the table. She stops. Her expression changes.

Bethany

What is that?

Bethany slowly walks toward the table. She picks up the file and looks at it. There is no name written on the outside. She hesitates before opening it, takes a deep breath, then opens the file. Her eyes immediately land on the first page. She freezes. Her hands begin to shake.

Bethany

No…

She looks again. The words on the document confirm what she fears — divorce papers. Bethany’s face drops. She slowly sits down on the edge of the bed.

Bethany

Larry…

Her eyes fill with tears. She turns another page, hoping there has been some mistake. But the documents are clear. Bethany covers her mouth as tears begin rolling down her face.

Bethany

You were really going to divorce me?

She looks around the room. The room suddenly feels completely different. Memories of her life with Larry flood her mind — the arguments, the good moments, the promises, everything. Bethany presses the papers against her chest.

Bethany

After everything I did for this family… How could you do this to me?

Bethany wipes her tears and grabs her phone. She immediately calls Larry. The phone rings once, twice, three times. No answer. She calls again. Still nothing.

Bethany

Come on, Larry. Pick up.

The call goes unanswered again. Bethany lowers the phone and stares at the divorce papers.

Bethany

So you’re not even going to talk to me?

She takes a shaky breath.

Cut to

Int. College Admissions Office — Same Time

Larry sits beside Brooke as she completes her admission paperwork. Brooke looks excited.

Brooke

Dad, I can’t believe I’m finally doing this.

Larry smiles.

Larry

You worked hard for this. You deserve the opportunity.

Brooke

Thank you for bringing me.

Larry nods. His phone vibrates in his pocket. He looks down — Bethany’s name appears on the screen. Larry stares at it. Brooke notices.

Brooke

Dad, aren’t you going to answer?

Larry turns the phone face down.

Larry

I’ll deal with it later.

Brooke looks confused.

Brooke

Is everything okay?

Larry pauses.

Larry

Yeah. Just focus on your admission.

Brooke nods, but she can tell something is wrong.

Cut Back To

Int. Bedroom — Afternoon

Bethany is still sitting on the bed. She calls Larry again. No answer. She sends him a message. She waits. Nothing. Bethany looks at the divorce papers again. Her sadness slowly turns into confusion, then anger.

Bethany

If you wanted to leave me, why didn’t you tell me?

She stands up and walks toward the mirror. Her eyes are red from crying.

Bethany

I deserve to hear the truth from you.

Bethany picks up the file and walks toward the living room. She places the papers on the table and looks toward the front door.

Bethany

When Larry comes home, we’re going to have a conversation.

She takes a deep breath. But then her phone rings. Bethany quickly grabs it — it isn’t Larry. She looks disappointed.

Bethany

Of course.

She sits down. For a moment, she considers calling Larry again. But she stops herself.

Bethany

No. I’m not going to keep begging him to answer me.

Bethany wipes her tears.

Bethany

If Larry wants a divorce, then he needs to stand in front of me and say it.

She gathers herself.

Cut to

Int. College — Later

Brooke finishes her admission process. She smiles as she holds her paperwork.

Brooke

Dad, I’m officially admitted!

Larry smiles and hugs her.

Larry

Congratulations.

Brooke

Mom is going to be so happy.

Larry’s smile disappears for a second. He looks away.

Brooke

Dad?

Larry

What?

Brooke

You look worried.

Larry takes a breath.

Larry

I’m just tired.

Brooke accepts the answer. They begin walking toward the exit. Larry pulls out his phone — he sees several missed calls from Bethany. His expression becomes serious.

Larry

She’s called me a lot.

Brooke looks at him.

Brooke

Then maybe you should call her back.

Larry doesn’t answer. He puts the phone back in his pocket.

Cut to

Int. Living Room — Evening

Bethany sits quietly. The divorce papers are still on the table. She hears the sound of a car outside. Her heart starts beating faster. She stands. The front door opens. Larry and Brooke walk inside. Brooke smiles.

Brooke

Mom!

Bethany looks at Brooke. She forces a small smile.

Bethany

Hey, baby.

Brooke walks over and hugs her.

Brooke

I got admitted!

Bethany hugs Brooke tightly.

Bethany

I’m proud of you.

Brooke notices Bethany’s red eyes.

Brooke

Mom, have you been crying?

Bethany looks at Larry. Larry immediately understands. Bethany points toward the table.

Bethany

Ask your father.

Brooke turns toward the table. She sees the file. Her smile disappears.

Brooke

What is that?

Larry walks toward the table. He sees the divorce papers. His expression becomes tense. Bethany stands across from him.

Bethany

You left those papers in our bedroom. I called you over and over.

Still nothing. Bethany’s voice trembles.

Bethany

Why, Larry?

Larry looks at Brooke.

Larry

Brooke, go upstairs.

Brooke hesitates.

Brooke

But—

Larry

Please.

Brooke slowly walks upstairs. Bethany watches her disappear, then turns back toward Larry.

Bethany

Now tell me the truth. Are you really planning to divorce me?

Larry looks at the papers, then at Bethany. The room becomes completely silent. Bethany waits for his answer. Her eyes fill with tears again.

Bethany

I just need you to tell me the truth.

Larry takes a deep breath.

Larry

Bethany…

Bethany raises her hand.

Bethany

No. Don’t say anything until you’re ready to be honest with me.

Larry looks at her. Bethany wipes away her tears.

Bethany

If you want to end this marriage, then look me in my eyes and tell me.

Larry remains silent. Bethany waits. The silence says more than words ever could.

Fade Out.
