When Love Turns Into Distance
Int. Bethany and Larry’s House – Living Room – Day
The room is quiet. Bethany sits carefully on the sofa, still recovering from her surgery. Her movements are slow, but her eyes are filled with hope. Larry stands nearby, distracted and distant. Bethany looks at him for a moment before gathering the courage to speak.
BETHANY
Larry… I’ve been thinking about us. We used to be so happy together. I think we should bring that love back. Maybe we should go somewhere together. Just you and me. We could spend some quality time together… away from everything.
She looks at Larry, waiting for an answer. For a moment, there is silence. Then Larry’s expression suddenly changes. His face hardens.
LARRY
Are you serious right now? Have you even looked at your condition? You just had surgery. You can barely sit up properly, and you’re talking about going out?
BETHANY
I know I’m still recovering. But I just wanted us to spend some time together.
LARRY
This isn’t the time for all that.
BETHANY
I’m not asking for anything big. I just want my husband back.
Larry looks away. The words hit him, but instead of softening, his frustration grows.
LARRY
Bethany, I don’t want to argue about this.
BETHANY
I’m not trying to argue. I’m trying to save what we have.
Larry remains silent. Bethany slowly stands, struggling with her movement. She takes a few careful steps toward him.
BETHANY
Do you remember how we used to be? We used to laugh together. We used to make plans. We used to want to spend every moment together. I just want that Larry back.
Larry’s jaw tightens. He looks increasingly irritated.
LARRY
I said I don’t want to talk about this.
BETHANY
Then when will you talk to me?
Larry has no answer. A heavy silence fills the room. Suddenly, footsteps are heard from the hallway. Layntee and Brooke enter the room. Bethany looks toward them. Larry turns toward Layntee.
LARRY
I’m going to Layntee’s house.
Bethany’s eyes widen. Larry grabs his things.
BETHANY
Larry, please… You’re leaving? After everything I just told you?
Larry stops for a moment but doesn’t turn around.
LARRY
I need some space.
BETHANY
And you’re taking them with you?
LARRY
I’m going to Layntee’s. That’s all.
Bethany’s breathing becomes shaky. He opens the door. Bethany follows as far as she can, but her body prevents her from moving quickly.
BETHANY
Please don’t leave like this.
Larry walks outside. Layntee follows him. Brooke pauses at the doorway and looks back at Bethany. For a brief moment, their eyes meet. Bethany looks completely broken. Brooke slowly turns and follows Larry and Layntee. The door closes. Bethany stands alone. Silence. She stares at the closed door. Her lips tremble. She slowly walks back toward the sofa and sits down. The tears finally begin to fall.
BETHANY
Why? I only wanted to spend time with you.
She covers her face with her hands. Her shoulders begin to shake. The pain she has been trying to hide finally overwhelms her.
BETHANY
I did everything for us… Why isn’t it enough?
She cries harder. Outside, Larry, Layntee, and Brooke walk away from the house. Inside, Bethany remains completely alone. She looks at the empty room. The same room that once felt like home now feels cold and unfamiliar. Bethany wipes her tears, but more continue to fall.
BETHANY
I just wanted my family together.
She breaks down again. The camera slowly pulls back. Bethany becomes smaller in the frame as the distance between her and Larry feels bigger than ever.
Ext. House – Day
Larry walks beside Layntee. Brooke follows behind them. Larry looks ahead, still angry. But for a moment, his expression changes. He seems to remember Bethany standing at the door. He looks back. The house is still visible in the distance. Layntee notices.
LAYNTEE
Larry?
Larry turns back toward her.
LARRY
Nothing.
He continues walking. Brooke looks back at the house too. Her expression is filled with concern.
Int. Bethany and Larry’s House – Living Room – Same Time
Bethany sits alone on the sofa. Her tears slowly turn into quiet sobs. She reaches for a nearby photograph of herself and Larry. She stares at it. A painful smile appears through her tears.
BETHANY
We were so happy…
She presses the photograph against her chest. Her eyes close. The room falls silent again. The camera slowly moves away from Bethany. She sits alone, holding onto the memories of a love that now feels like it is slipping away.
