Bethany’s World Starts Falling Apart

The situation inside the house had already become tense, but nobody expected things to escalate this quickly. Bethany was frustrated, emotional, and overwhelmed by everything happening around her. Larry tried to stay calm, but Bethany’s anger continued to rise.

Things suddenly took an unexpected turn. Bethany turned toward Larry and, in a moment of anger, spit on him.

Larry stood there for a second, completely stunned. Instead of reacting with anger, however, he simply laughed.

Larry:
“Bethany, seriously? After everything that’s happening, this is what you choose to do?”
Bethany:
“Don’t laugh at me, Larry! You think this is funny?”
Larry:
“I’m not laughing because it’s funny. I’m laughing because you’re acting like this is going to change anything.”
Bethany:
“And what exactly is that supposed to mean?”

Larry took a deep breath before answering.

Larry:
“It means you already know where this relationship is heading. Divorce is coming, Bethany. You can get angry, yell, or do whatever you want, but sooner or later, we’re going our separate ways.”

Bethany’s expression suddenly changed. The anger on her face was replaced by fear.

Bethany:
“Divorce?”
Larry:
“Yes. You can’t keep treating me like this and expect everything to stay the same.”

Bethany looked away, trying to hide how deeply his words had affected her.

Bethany:
“So you’re really going to leave me?”
Larry:
“I’m saying that things have reached a point where we both need to think about what happens next.”

For Bethany, those words were terrifying. She had been so focused on fighting with Larry that she hadn’t stopped to think about what life might look like without him.

Brooke Is Preparing to Leave

But then another thought crossed her mind: Brooke.

Brooke had been one of the people Bethany depended on the most. She knew Brooke was planning to become independent and find a job. At first, Bethany had tried to ignore the idea, hoping Brooke would stay around.

But now Brooke’s plans suddenly felt real. She was preparing to leave and build a life of her own.

Later, Bethany spoke with Brooke.

Bethany:
“So you’re really leaving?”
Brooke:
“I’m not trying to abandon you, Bethany. I just need to start doing something for myself.”
Bethany:
“You’re going to get a job and move on with your life?”
Brooke:
“Yes. I need independence. I can’t stay here forever.”

Bethany became quiet.

Bethany:
“But what am I supposed to do?”
Brooke:
“You’re going to have to figure some things out too.”

Those words hit Bethany hard. She realized that Larry might soon be gone, and Brooke was preparing to leave as well. The two people she had relied on could soon be living completely separate lives.

Bethany Fears Being Alone

Bethany sat quietly, thinking about everything.

Bethany:
“If Larry leaves… and Brooke leaves… who’s going to take care of me?”

Nobody answered immediately. That silence made Bethany even more nervous.

She was already struggling with being sick and knew she needed support. The thought of being alone frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

Bethany:
“I don’t know what I’m going to do…”
Bethany:
“What’s going to happen to me?”

For the first time, Bethany wasn’t angry. She wasn’t yelling. She wasn’t arguing.

She was scared.

Larry watched her from across the room. Even though their relationship was falling apart, he could see that Bethany was genuinely worried about her future.

Larry:
“Bethany, you have to understand something. You can’t depend on other people forever.”
Bethany:
“But I’m sick. I need somebody.”
Larry:
“And that’s exactly why you need to start thinking about what you’re going to do for yourself.”
Bethany:
“I never thought everything would change this fast.”
Larry:
“Sometimes life changes before we’re ready for it.”

Bethany looked down at the floor, realizing that her situation was becoming more serious by the minute.

She had pushed Larry away with her anger. Brooke was preparing to leave to pursue her own career. And now Bethany was left wondering who would be there when she needed help.

A Future Bethany Can’t Avoid

The house suddenly felt much quieter.

Bethany:
“I thought I had people around me… but what if I end up alone?”

That question lingered in the air.

Larry didn’t have an easy answer. Brooke was determined to become independent. And Bethany was finally beginning to understand that she couldn’t expect everyone to put their lives on hold for her.

The biggest question was no longer whether Larry and Bethany would divorce. It was whether Bethany could learn to stand on her own before everyone else moved on.
Bethany:
“I’m scared, Larry.”
Larry:
“Then it’s time to start preparing for what comes next.”

Bethany took a deep breath.

For the first time, she realized that the future she had been avoiding was already knocking on the door. And now she had to decide what she was going to do about it.
