Bethany, Shara & The Atlanta Police

The Price of Friendship

Bethany, Shara and the Atlanta Police

The Chilling Threat

The chill of the iron handcuffs, the blare of sirens, and the flashing red and blue lights of the Atlanta Police were enough to instill terror even in Shara’s dreams.

Her mom had landed on the Atlanta Police Department’s hit list in a major case, creating clear chances of her arrest and years behind bars. Shara knew how stubborn her mom was and that she couldn’t break free from the clutches of the law alone.

Shara Turns to Bethany

Seeing no other way, Shara decided to turn to her closest and most influential friend, Bethany.

Bethany’s father, Mr. Neuburger, was a highly influential and successful businessman in the city, with deep connections in political and legal circles, while Bethany’s uncle held a key position in the judicial system.

“Bethany, please! Only you can help me. The Atlanta Police are after my mom. Tell your dad to help my mom. He is a big businessman with many connections; he can get her out of this trouble!”
“Shara, stay strong. I will talk to my dad, but before my dad takes any action, I want to meet your mom myself. I want to see what the actual situation is so we can better understand how to save her from the police.”

The Secret Hideout

Shara hesitantly decided to take Bethany to her mom’s secret hideout, though she knew very well that her mom’s attitude was unpredictable and traditional.

When Bethany arrived with Shara at the small, dark room where Shara’s mom was hiding from the police, there was a strange tension in the air.

A Painful Rejection

Bethany stepped forward with utmost politeness and sympathy, but as soon as Shara’s mom saw Bethany, expressions of hatred and anger surfaced on her face.

“Who is this, Shara? Why did you bring her here? I don’t want any help from this white girl! These people are all about show! I won’t beg anyone, nor do I want charity from her or her rich businessman father!”

Bethany was hurt by the harsh words of Shara’s mom, but she put her friendship and feelings for Shara first.

“Auntie, I didn’t come here to look down on you. Shara is my best friend, and she asked me for help. I just want to make sure you stay safe from the police and give us a chance so we can help you.”
“I don’t need you or your dad. Get out of here!”

Mr. Neuburger Takes Action

Despite the rude behavior and flat refusal from Shara’s mom, Bethany did not lose heart. She knew that if she didn’t help Shara, her mom’s imprisonment was guaranteed.

She immediately went back and spoke to her father, Mr. Neuburger, in detail.

As a successful businessman, Mr. Neuburger understood the finer details of every matter. He immediately consulted Bethany’s uncle, who was well-versed in law and the court system.

Using his influence behind the scenes, Mr. Neuburger tried to find a way to pull Shara’s mom out of this legal storm.

Mr. Neuburger strictly instructed Bethany not to get directly involved or go there during any police raid, and that he and his lawyers would handle the entire situation.

The Police Close In

However, the pressure from the Atlanta Police on Shara’s mom was mounting by the minute.

When Bethany received news that the police had traced the hideout of Shara’s mom and were about to raid it at any moment, she couldn’t stay still.

She had planned with her father, but at that critical moment, Mr. Neuburger was unable to be present with Bethany due to an urgent business meeting and legal consultation session.

Bethany thought that if she went with Shara to move her mom to the safe location suggested by her father, the situation could be controlled before the police arrived.

The Escape Attempt

Bethany and Shara rushed to reach Shara’s mom. Shara’s mom was still being stubborn, but Bethany forced her to come along.

“Auntie! The time for arguing is over! The Atlanta Police are coming to arrest you; we need to leave right now!”

Just as the three of them were exiting through the back door of the house, red and blue lights suddenly flashed everywhere. The screaming sirens surrounded the entire area.

Atlanta Police officers and commandos pointed their weapons at them.

Police Raid

“Police! Nobody move! Put your hands up!”

The loud voice of the police officer rang out, breaking the silence.

Shara’s and Bethany’s hands raised automatically. Bethany stepped forward to explain.

“Officer! You’re misunderstanding! I am Bethany, the daughter of the prominent businessman Mr. Neuburger. We were just—”

The police chief sternly interrupted Bethany and pulled out handcuffs.

“We don’t care who you are or how big of a businessman your dad is! Shara’s mom is a wanted suspect in a serious crime, and the fundamental rule of law states that anyone who harbors a serious offender, aids in their escape, or acts as an accomplice will be considered equally guilty!”

Three Women in Handcuffs

Before Shara or Bethany could comprehend what was happening, the police officers slapped cold iron handcuffs on all three of them—Shara’s mom, Shara, and Bethany.

The flashing police lights illuminated their terrified faces as the three women realized that the situation had completely changed.

Bethany Breaks Down

The darkness inside the police van felt like a horrific nightmare to Bethany.

Tears streamed continuously down her face. Sobbing, she kept asking over and over:

“What is my fault? What did I do wrong? I was only trying to help my friend! I didn’t commit any crime!”

The Officer’s Warning

The police officer looked back without an ounce of pity and replied coldly:

“Young lady! When you participate in hiding and helping a criminal flee from the police, in the eyes of the law, you aren’t just a helper—you are an accomplice to the crime. The law will arrest anyone who becomes part of this chain of crime, no matter who they are!”

Shara’s Heartbreak

Shara looked at her mom, who was still staring at the floor in silent bitterness, while Shara’s heart broke with shame and grief seeing her friend Bethany crying in handcuffs.

Despite her mom’s harsh behavior, Bethany had risked her life and future purely out of friendship.

But the Atlanta Police law recognized no emotions or friendship— in their eyes, all three of them were now criminals on the police record.
