BETHANY & CHARLOTTE

The Slap That Changed Everything

One act of kindness sparks an explosive argument—and a mysterious document threatens to turn one family’s world upside down.

1. A Request for Help

Sharra and Brooke had been talking about Sharra’s mother for days. Her mother was caught in serious legal trouble, and the family feared that without a skilled lawyer, her chances of getting released would become even slimmer. Sharra knew that Bethany might be able to help because Bethany’s father, Mr. Burger, had the connections and resources to find an experienced attorney.

After hearing Sharra and Brooke out, Bethany finally decided to contact her father. She explained the situation carefully and asked him to help arrange a consultation with a capable lawyer who could review the case and explain the legal options.

Mr. Burger listened without interrupting. For a moment, Bethany thought he would agree immediately. Instead, his expression grew serious. “I’ll see what I can do,” he said, “but there’s someone you need to speak with first. I’m sending Charlotte to meet you.”

Bethany was puzzled. She could not understand why Charlotte needed to be involved in a request that was supposed to be about legal help. Still, she agreed to meet her, hoping the conversation would be straightforward.

2. Charlotte’s Unexpected Arrival

Charlotte arrived later that day, her face tense and her steps sharp against the floor. She barely greeted Bethany before taking her by the arm and leading her away from the others, into a quieter corner of the room.

“Have you lost your mind?” Charlotte demanded. “Are you seriously going to ask your father to help the very people who hurt you?”

Bethany pulled her arm back, stunned by the accusation. “Why are you talking to me like this? I’m trying to help Sharra’s mother get legal representation. What is so terrible about that?”

Charlotte gave a bitter laugh. “What’s terrible? Have you forgotten every time they let you down? When you needed support, they weren’t there. You went through so much, and now you’re using your own family’s resources to help them?”

3. Old Wounds, New Accusations

Charlotte’s words grew harsher with every sentence. She reminded Bethany of old arguments, painful disappointments, and moments when she believed Bethany had been treated unfairly. In Charlotte’s mind, she had always stood by her cousin. Now, she felt that Bethany was ignoring everything she had done for her.

“You should be making them answer for what happened,” Charlotte said. “Instead, you’re asking your father to help them. After everything, you’re still choosing them over the people who stood beside you?”

Bethany’s surprise slowly turned into frustration. “I never asked you to hold a grudge for me,” she replied. “You supported me because you chose to. I appreciate that, but you cannot decide who deserves help on my behalf.”

“So now my opinion means nothing?” Charlotte snapped.

“That’s not what I said. This is a family matter, and I want to do what I believe is right. Helping someone get a fair legal review doesn’t erase the past. It means I don’t want anger to make every decision for me.”

For a brief moment, Charlotte had no answer. Then she noticed Brooke approaching the hallway and seemed to take it as another sign that everyone was siding against her. Her voice rose, and the disagreement became a full-blown argument.

4. The Slap

“You never listen!” Charlotte shouted. “I have defended you again and again, and now you’re making me look like the villain!”

Bethany stood her ground, even though her hands were trembling. “I’m not trying to make you look like anything. But you don’t get to control my choices just because you helped me in the past.”

Charlotte stepped closer, her anger overtaking her judgment. Before Bethany could react, Charlotte raised her hand and slapped her across the face.

The room fell silent. Bethany pressed a hand to her cheek, staring at Charlotte in disbelief. Her eyes filled with tears—not only from the shock of the sudden strike, but from the realization that her own cousin had crossed a line that words could never excuse.

At that exact moment, Brooke entered with Zairy. They stopped in the doorway, stunned by what they had witnessed. Brooke rushed to Bethany’s side.

“Charlotte, what have you done?” Brooke demanded. “Why would you hit her?”

Zairy looked from Bethany to Charlotte, unable to make sense of the scene. “You could have disagreed with her,” he said. “Why did it have to come to this?”

5. A Document No One Expected

Charlotte’s expression shifted. The anger remained, but beneath it was something harder to read—fear, perhaps, or the strain of keeping a secret. Instead of apologizing, she opened her bag and pulled out a folded document.

“You all think I’m the problem,” she said, placing the paper on the table. “But none of you knows the whole story. Mr. Burger signed this, and if Bethany gets involved in Sharra’s mother’s case, everything could change.”

Bethany hesitated before reaching for the document. Brooke stood close beside her, while Zairy watched Charlotte carefully. The paper appeared official, and Mr. Burger’s signature was clearly visible at the bottom. Bethany began to read, her eyes moving quickly across the page.

Then her face went pale.

“No…” she whispered. “Why would Dad sign this?”

Charlotte folded her arms but said nothing. For the first time since arriving, she seemed less interested in winning the argument than in what Bethany had just discovered.

6. The Truth Behind the Signature

Brooke reached toward the paper. “Bethany, what does it say? Tell us!”

Bethany pulled the document close to her chest, still trying to understand its meaning. She looked at Charlotte, searching her face for an explanation. “If this is real, why didn’t you tell me before? And why did you have to hit me?”

Charlotte’s expression faltered. “I wanted you to stop before you got pulled into something you didn’t understand,” she said. “But I should never have put my hands on you.”

Her admission did not erase what she had done. Brooke remained beside Bethany, and Zairy insisted that they should verify the document directly with Mr. Burger before making any decisions. Bethany knew that helping Sharra’s mother might be more complicated than she had imagined—but she also knew that a signature on a page was not the same as hearing the truth from her father.
