BETHANY’S FINAL GOODBYE
SCENE 1: THE TRUTH ABOUT PUERTO RICO
LATE AFTERNOONThe house is unusually quiet. Bethany stands near the living room window, holding her phone. Her face turns pale as she discovers the truth about Larry’s secret trip.
Larry had told her that he was going to Miami, but the truth is different. He actually traveled to Puerto Rico without telling her.
Her fingers tremble. She reads the information again, hoping she has misunderstood. But the truth remains unchanged.
No… this can’t be true. Larry told me he was going to Miami. Why would he lie to me about something like this?
Tears fill her eyes. She remembers all the times she tried to save their relationship, believing that Larry would eventually open his heart to her.
I trusted him with everything. I kept telling myself that things would eventually get better, that he would finally let me into his life.
But he couldn’t even tell me the truth about where he was going.
Bethany wipes away her tears. Beneath her sadness, she begins to realize that she cannot continue living with uncertainty and broken trust.
I deserve honesty. I deserve someone who doesn’t make me question everything I believe about our relationship.
SCENE 2: THE CONFRONTATION
MOMENTS LATERLarry enters the living room and notices Bethany standing silently with her phone. Her expression immediately makes him uneasy.
What’s wrong, Bethany? Why are you looking at me like that?
Bethany raises her phone and looks directly into his eyes.
I want you to explain something to me.
Larry glances at the screen. His expression changes when he realizes that she knows about Puerto Rico.
Bethany, I…
You told me you were going to Miami. But you went to Puerto Rico instead. Why, Larry? Why did you feel the need to lie to me?
Larry looks away. The silence between them grows heavier.
Look at me when I’m talking to you! I trusted you. I believed your words, even when things between us weren’t going well.
I don’t know what to say.
Bethany lets out a disappointed laugh. His silence hurts more than any explanation could.
Of course you don’t. You had an answer when you wanted me to believe you were going to Miami. But now that I’ve discovered the truth, suddenly you have nothing to say.
Bethany, please. Can we talk about this calmly?
Calmly? You want me to stay calm after discovering that my own partner has been lying to me?
I’ve spent so much time trying to understand you. Every time you pushed me away, I convinced myself that you just needed more time.
But I can’t keep making excuses for someone who doesn’t seem willing to fight for us.
SCENE 3: A LOVE THAT LOST ITS WAY
CONTINUOUSBethany sits on the sofa while Larry stands a few feet away. The emotional distance between them feels impossible to cross.
Do you remember how hard I tried to make this relationship work?
She looks at the photographs on the nearby table, remembering a time when she believed their love could overcome anything.
I tried to get closer to you. I tried to understand your feelings. I waited for the day when you would finally look at me the way you used to.
I wanted us to share our lives. I wanted affection, closeness, and the kind of relationship where neither of us had to feel alone.
But you never really let me in. There was no real intimacy between us, no meaningful progress, and no sign that we were becoming closer.
Larry lowers his head. Bethany struggles to hold back the tears she has been carrying for so long.
I kept asking myself what I was doing wrong. I wondered whether I wasn’t enough for you or whether there was something about me that made you want to stay away.
Now I realize that I can’t spend the rest of my life trying to earn the love and honesty that should already exist in a relationship.
Bethany, I never wanted things to end this way.
Then why did you let them get this far?
Larry remains silent. Bethany slowly rises from the sofa, having finally reached her decision.
I’ve made my decision, Larry. I’m leaving.
What? No, Bethany. You can’t be serious.
I’ve never been more serious about anything in my life.
SCENE 4: PACKING HER LIFE AWAY
EVENINGBethany enters her bedroom and closes the door. She stands silently in the middle of the room, looking at the life she once imagined building with Larry.
After a moment, she opens the closet and takes out her suitcase. She places it on the bed and begins folding her clothes.
Her eyes suddenly fall on a photograph of her and Larry. She picks it up and stares at their smiling faces.
I really thought we could make it work.
She holds the photograph close for a moment, remembering the hopes and promises that once made her happy.
I thought if I loved you enough, if I stayed patient enough, eventually you would meet me halfway.
But I can’t build a future on memories of what we used to be.
