Amber Comes Home
The front door suddenly opened.
Dave was sitting alone in the living room, staring at the floor. He had barely touched his food all day. His plate was still sitting on the table exactly where he had left it.
Then Amber walked inside.
She was still wearing the hospital clothes.
Dave immediately stood up.
“Amber?”
She didn’t answer.
She slowly closed the door behind her and looked at him. Her face was tired, hurt, and completely different from the woman who had left the house earlier.
Dave took one step toward her.
“Are you okay?”
Amber stared at him.
“Do I look okay, Dave?”
Dave lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Amber Confronts Dave
Amber’s voice became shaky.
“You’re sorry?”
Dave nodded.
“I know I messed up.”
Amber suddenly walked closer.
“You don’t even understand what you did.”
Dave looked at her.
“I know I hurt you.”
“No,” Amber said. “You don’t.”
For a few seconds, the room went completely silent.
Then Amber slapped Dave hard across the face.
Dave froze.
His eyes filled with tears, but he didn’t say anything.
Amber stood there, breathing heavily.
“You know what hurts the most?” she asked. “It isn’t even what happened today.”
Dave slowly turned his face back toward her.
“Then what is it?”
Amber Reveals Her Pain
Amber pointed toward the hospital clothes she was wearing.
“I walked into that hospital carrying our future.”
Her voice cracked.
“And I walked out without it.”
Dave’s expression changed.
He looked down at the floor.
“Amber…”
“Don’t.”
“I never wanted this to happen.”
“But it happened!”
Dave’s eyes became watery.
Amber continued.
“And you weren’t there when I needed you the most.”
Dave whispered, “I was scared.”
Amber laughed bitterly.
“You were scared?”
“Yes.”
“I was scared too, Dave. But I was the one lying in that hospital bed.”
Dave couldn’t answer.
Dave Regrets Everything
Amber wiped her tears.
“The doctors told me what happened. And while I was sitting there trying to understand how my life had changed, all I could think about was you.”
Dave looked at her.
“What were you thinking?”
“I was thinking that maybe you would walk through that door.”
Dave’s face fell.
“But you never came.”
Dave swallowed hard.
“I should have been there.”
“Yes.”
“I should have held your hand.”
“Yes.”
“I should have told you everything was going to be okay.”
Amber shook her head.
“You couldn’t even do that.”
Dave stepped closer.
“I was wrong.”
Amber looked directly into his eyes.
“You weren’t just wrong, Dave. You made me feel alone when I needed you most.”
Amber Says It’s Over
Dave sat down.
He covered his face with both hands.
“I don’t know how to fix this.”
Amber stood silently for a moment.
Then she said, “You can’t.”
Dave looked up.
“What?”
“You can’t fix this.”
“Amber, please.”
“No.”
Dave stood again.
“I’ll do anything.”
Amber shook her head.
“That’s the problem. You always say you’ll do anything after the damage is already done.”
Dave looked completely broken.
“I love you.”
Amber’s eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you too.”
Dave went silent.
Amber continued.
“I loved you enough to keep forgiving things that kept hurting me.”
Amber Chooses Peace
Dave whispered, “Give me one more chance.”
Amber shook her head.
“I gave you chances.”
“Please.”
“I gave you my trust.”
Dave looked down.
“I gave you my heart.”
A tear rolled down Amber’s cheek.
“And now I don’t have anything left to give you.”
Dave walked toward her.
“Amber, I’m begging you.”
She stepped back.
“Don’t beg me.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to hate you.”
Dave stopped.
Amber took a deep breath.
“I don’t want revenge. I don’t want to fight anymore. I don’t even want to see you suffer.”
Dave looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“Then what do you want?”
Amber answered quietly.
“I want peace.”
The Divorce Papers
Dave looked confused.
“Peace?”
“Yes.”
Amber reached into her bag and pulled out an envelope.
Dave stared at it.
“What is that?”
Amber held it out.
“Something you need to sign.”
Dave slowly took the envelope.
His hands started shaking.
“Amber…”
“It’s the divorce papers.”
Dave’s face went completely blank.
“No.”
Amber looked at him.
“Yes.”
“No, Amber. Please.”
“I’ve made my decision.”
Dave opened the envelope but couldn’t bring himself to look at the papers.
“You’re really leaving me?”
Amber nodded.
“Yes.”
Amber Explains Why
Dave’s voice broke.
“After everything?”
Amber looked at him sadly.
“Because of everything.”
Dave sat down again.
He stared at the papers.
“I thought we’d grow old together.”
“So did I.”
“I thought we’d have a family.”
Amber looked away.
“So did I.”
The silence became unbearable.
Dave wiped his face.
“I don’t deserve another chance, do I?”
Amber slowly shook her head.
“Not from me.”
Dave nodded.
For the first time, he didn’t argue.
He didn’t blame her.
He didn’t try to change her mind.
He simply accepted what he had done.
Amber’s Final Decision
After several seconds, Dave asked,
“Is there somebody else?”
Amber looked surprised.
“No.”
“Then why are you leaving?”
“Because I finally realized I deserve to be loved without constantly wondering whether I’m enough.”
Dave lowered his head.
Amber continued.
“One day, I want to meet someone who loves me for who I am.”
Dave looked up.
“Someone else?”
“Yes.”
“You already found him?”
“No.”
Amber took a breath.
“But when I do, I want him to be someone who truly loves me.”
Dave said nothing.
“I want someone who protects my heart,” Amber continued. “Someone who listens to me. Someone who stands beside me when life gets difficult. Someone who doesn’t make me feel alone.”
Dave’s Last Apology
Dave’s eyes filled with tears again.
“I should have been that man.”
Amber nodded.
“You should have.”
Dave looked down at the papers.
“I am sorry.”
Amber stared at him.
“For everything?”
“For everything.”
His voice became quieter.
“I am sorry I wasn’t there.”
Amber’s eyes became wet.
“I am sorry I made you feel alone.”
Dave nodded.
“I am sorry I didn’t understand how much you were hurting.”
Amber wiped her tears.
“And I’m sorry that I can’t stay.”
Dave looked at her.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Amber paused.
“Maybe.”
Dave nodded.
“But forgiveness doesn’t mean I have to come back.”
Dave understood.
Amber Walks Away
Amber picked up her bag.
She walked toward the door.
Dave watched her leave.
Just before she opened it, he said,
“Amber.”
She stopped.
Dave looked at her one last time.
“I hope whoever you meet next treats you better than I did.”
Amber closed her eyes for a moment.
Then she turned around.
“I hope you become a better man too, Dave.”
She opened the door.
Dave stood alone in the living room.
The divorce papers were still in his hand.
He looked at the untouched food on the table.
Then he looked toward the empty doorway.
The Final Realization
And for the first time, Dave realized something painful:
Amber wasn’t leaving because she stopped caring.
She was leaving because she had finally started caring about herself.
The door closed.
Dave sat down slowly.
He looked at the divorce papers again.
Then he whispered,
“I lost the woman I was supposed to protect.”
Outside, Amber walked away from the house.
She was heartbroken.
But she wasn’t turning back.
Because sometimes the hardest goodbye isn’t the end of love.
It’s the beginning of choosing yourself.
