THE CASE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

SCENE 1 — THE OFFICE CORRIDOR

The long office corridor is unusually quiet.

Bethany walks slowly toward her father’s office, holding a thick file against her chest. Several papers are visible inside, but their details remain unclear.

Her expression is tense.

She knows she is about to ask questions that may change everything.

She stops outside the office door.

For a moment, she hesitates.

Then she takes a deep breath and knocks.

MR. NEWBURGER

Come in.

Bethany opens the door and steps inside.

Her father, Mr. Newburger, sits behind his large desk. Several documents are spread before him. He looks busy, serious, and already irritated.

Bethany carefully closes the door behind her.

BETHANY

Dad… I need to talk to you.

Mr. Newburger looks up.

His eyes immediately fall on the file in her hands.

His expression changes.

MR. NEWBURGER

What is that?

Bethany walks toward the desk.

She places the file carefully in front of him.

BETHANY

These are the papers concerning Mom’s case.

Silence.

Mr. Newburger stares at the file.

His face becomes tense.

Bethany watches him carefully.

BETHANY

I found these papers, and I thought you should see them.

Mr. Newburger doesn’t touch the file.

Instead, he leans back in his chair.

His jaw tightens.

MR. NEWBURGER

Where did you get these?

BETHANY

That doesn’t matter right now.

I just want to understand what happened.

Mr. Newburger suddenly stands.

His chair moves backward with a sharp sound.

Bethany takes a small step back.

SCENE 2 — THE WARNING

Mr. Newburger walks around the desk.

His voice is controlled, but his anger is obvious.

MR. NEWBURGER

You shouldn’t have brought this here.

BETHANY

Why?

MR. NEWBURGER

Because this has nothing to do with you.

Bethany looks at him with disappointment.

BETHANY

She’s my mother.

How can you say it has nothing to do with me?

Mr. Newburger turns away.

For a moment, he says nothing.

Bethany grips the file tightly.

BETHANY

I only came here because I thought you would help me.

Mr. Newburger turns back toward her.

His expression is now much harsher.

MR. NEWBURGER

You don’t understand what you’re getting yourself into.

BETHANY

Then explain it to me.

MR. NEWBURGER

No.

Bethany looks stunned.

BETHANY

No?

MR. NEWBURGER

You need to stay away from this case.

Bethany shakes her head.

BETHANY

I can’t do that.

I need answers.

Mr. Newburger’s anger rises.

He points toward the door.

MR. NEWBURGER

Then leave.

Bethany remains where she is.

She cannot believe what she is hearing.

BETHANY

Dad…

MR. NEWBURGER

I said leave!

His voice echoes through the office.

Bethany’s eyes become wet, but she refuses to cry.

SCENE 3 — “GET OUT OF MY OFFICE”

Bethany slowly picks up the file.

Her hands are trembling.

She looks at her father one last time.

BETHANY

Why are you so afraid of these papers?

Mr. Newburger freezes.

The question clearly hits a nerve.

MR. NEWBURGER

I’m not afraid of anything.

BETHANY

Then why won’t you even look at them?

He steps closer.

His voice becomes low and serious.

MR. NEWBURGER

Because I know what this case can do to people.

Bethany’s expression changes.

BETHANY

What does that mean?

Mr. Newburger looks toward the office door.

MR. NEWBURGER

It means you need to stay away.

BETHANY

I can’t walk away from Mom’s case.

MR. NEWBURGER

You can, and you will.

Bethany looks down at the file.

BETHANY

What are you hiding from me?

Mr. Newburger’s face hardens.

MR. NEWBURGER

Enough.

You are leaving this office right now.

Bethany doesn’t move.

He raises his voice again.

MR. NEWBURGER

Get out of my office, Bethany!

The room falls silent.

Bethany’s eyes fill with tears.

She turns toward the door.

SCENE 4 — THE FINAL WARNING

MR. NEWBURGER

If you continue with this case, you’ll get caught in it too.

Bethany slowly turns around.

She looks at him in disbelief.

BETHANY

What did you just say?

Mr. Newburger says nothing.

BETHANY

You said I’d get caught in the case?

MR. NEWBURGER

Yes.

So stay away from it.

BETHANY

Why?

MR. NEWBURGER

Because some truths are dangerous.

Bethany stares at him.

Her fear begins to mix with determination.

BETHANY

Maybe the truth is dangerous because someone is trying to hide it.

Mr. Newburger’s eyes narrow.

MR. NEWBURGER

Don’t test me.

BETHANY

I’m not testing you.

I’m trying to find out what happened to my mother.

A long silence follows.

Neither of them looks away.

Finally, Bethany reaches for the door.

SCENE 5 — OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Bethany steps into the hallway.

The door closes behind her.

She stands there holding the file against her chest.

Her eyes fill with tears.

But she doesn’t let them fall.

Inside the office, Mr. Newburger remains standing.

He looks toward the closed door.

His anger slowly fades.

Something else appears on his face.

Fear.

He walks back toward the desk and looks at the file Bethany had left behind.

He touches it but doesn’t open it.

His hand trembles slightly.

MR. NEWBURGER

You shouldn’t have found these papers, Bethany.

Outside, Bethany walks down the corridor.

She stops near a window.

She looks at the file in her hands.

Her father’s warning keeps repeating in her mind.

You’ll get caught in this case too.

Bethany wipes away a tear.

Her expression becomes determined.

BETHANY

I’m sorry, Dad.

But I’m not walking away.

She looks down at the papers.

Whatever secrets they contain, she knows one thing now—

Her mother’s case is far more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Bethany walks away down the corridor.

Behind her, the office door remains closed.

Inside, Mr. Newburger stands alone.

He finally opens a drawer beneath his desk.

Inside is another file.

An old photograph.

And a secret that could change everything.

Mr. Newburger stares at it.

His face turns pale.

MR. NEWBURGER

If she finds out the truth…

He stops.

He closes the drawer quickly.

The office falls silent.

Outside, Bethany disappears around the corner.

But the case has already begun to pull her deeper into a mystery she may never be able to escape.
