Bethany Tells Larry Everything — Then They Confront Mr. Newburger
Bethany had been carrying something on her mind for a while. She knew that Mr. Newburger had spoken to her about the situation with her family, and some of his words had left her feeling confused and pressured. Instead of keeping everything to herself, Bethany decided to tell Larry exactly what had been said.
She knew Larry might be upset, but she also believed honesty was the only way to strengthen their relationship.
Bethany: “Larry, I need to tell you something.” Larry: “What happened?”Bethany took a breath before explaining that she had spoken with Mr. Newburger and that he had told her to contact the police if the situation became serious.
Bethany: “He told me that I needed to call the police if things got worse. He was very serious about it.” Larry: “He told you to call the police?”Bethany nodded. She explained that she had not wanted to hide anything from Larry because she wanted their relationship to become stronger.
Bethany: “I don’t want other people making decisions about our relationship. If something is happening, I want us to deal with it together.”Larry was clearly bothered by what he had heard. After thinking about it, he decided that the best thing to do was confront Mr. Newburger directly.
Larry: “If Mr. Newburger thinks he can tell you what to do without talking to me, then we need to have a conversation with him.”Bethany agreed, and the two headed to Mr. Newburger’s office. When they arrived, Mr. Newburger immediately noticed that something was wrong.
Mr. Newburger: “Larry? Bethany? What are you two doing here?” Larry: “We came because Bethany told me what you said to her.”Mr. Newburger looked at Bethany before explaining that he had only been trying to protect her and make sure she knew she had options if she ever felt unsafe.
Mr. Newburger: “I was trying to protect her. I didn’t mean to create more problems between the two of you.” Larry: “Then why did you tell Bethany to call the police?”The tension in the room immediately increased. Larry was angry that Mr. Newburger had given Bethany serious advice without first discussing the situation with him.
Larry: “You could have talked to me first.” Mr. Newburger: “And you could have listened before getting angry.”Bethany stepped between them, realizing that the confrontation was becoming more intense than she had expected.
Bethany: “Both of you, please. This is exactly why I wanted Larry to know what happened. I don’t want everybody fighting because of me.”Larry looked at Bethany and reassured her that she was not responsible for the disagreement. Mr. Newburger also explained that his intention had been to make sure Bethany knew she could seek help if necessary.
Larry: “I understand that. But I don’t appreciate someone telling Bethany what she should do without knowing everything that’s happening between us.” Mr. Newburger: “I don’t appreciate anyone making Bethany feel like she can’t seek help when she’s uncomfortable.”The room became quiet. Bethany looked from Larry to Mr. Newburger and realized that the argument had exposed a much bigger issue: everyone needed better communication.
Bethany: “I wanted Larry and me to become stronger, but now everybody is arguing.”Larry finally took a breath and lowered his voice. He admitted that he respected Bethany for being honest with him.
Larry: “You did the right thing by telling me.” Bethany: “I just want us to stop letting other people come between us.”Larry nodded. He knew that rebuilding trust would require both of them to communicate openly instead of allowing misunderstandings to grow.
Larry: “Then we need to start trusting each other more.” Bethany: “That’s exactly what I want.”A New Test of Trust
Bethany’s decision to tell Larry everything changed the situation. What began as a confrontation became an important conversation about honesty, communication, trust, and loyalty.
