SCENE 1 — THE BEDROOM — AFTERNOON
Warm sunlight fills the elegant bedroom. Shopping bags sit near
the wardrobe while Shayla stands in front of the mirror, checking
her phone.
She looks excited but slightly worried.
Across the room, Anthony is organizing a few things on a table.
D’Nisha is nearby, quietly watching him.
Shayla takes a deep breath and walks toward Anthony.
SHAYLA
Anthony, can I ask you something?
Anthony looks up.
ANTHONY
Sure. What is it?
Shayla hesitates for a moment before speaking.
SHAYLA
I need some money. I’m going shopping today, and I don’t have
enough with me.
Anthony looks surprised.
ANTHONY
You need money for shopping?
SHAYLA
Yes. I just need a little help.
Anthony glances toward D’Nisha.
D’Nisha’s expression immediately changes.
She watches Shayla carefully.
ANTHONY
How much do you need?
Shayla tells him the amount quietly.
ANTHONY
That’s quite a lot, Shayla.
SHAYLA
I know, but I really need it.
D’Nisha steps closer.
D’NISHA
Why are you asking Anthony for money?
Shayla looks at her.
SHAYLA
Because I thought he could help me.
D’Nisha looks at Anthony. Anthony seems uncomfortable.
D’NISHA
And why exactly does she think you should give her money?
Anthony doesn’t immediately answer.
The silence makes D’Nisha even more suspicious.
D’NISHA
Anthony?
ANTHONY
D’Nisha, it’s not what you’re thinking.

Anthony looks toward Shayla.

I’ll talk to you about it privately.
D’Nisha’s expression hardens.

She turns around and walks toward the door.
Anthony follows her.
SCENE 2 — THE HALLWAY — MOMENTS LATER
Anthony and D’Nisha walk down the hallway.
D’Nisha suddenly stops and turns toward him.
D’NISHA
Tell me what’s going on.
ANTHONY
Nothing is going on.
D’NISHA
Then why is Shayla asking you for money?
Anthony takes a breath.
ANTHONY
Because of her child.
D’NISHA
What does that have to do with you?
Anthony pauses.
ANTHONY
Shayla is the mother of my son.
D’Nisha stares at him.
For a moment, she says nothing.
D’NISHA
So that’s why she thinks she can come to you whenever she wants?
ANTHONY
That’s not what I said.
D’NISHA
But that’s exactly what it looks like.
ANTHONY
D’Nisha, listen to me.
D’NISHA
What exactly is your relationship with Shayla?
Anthony answers firmly.
ANTHONY
She is the mother of my son. That’s all.
D’NISHA

SCENE 3 — BACK IN THE BEDROOM
Shayla is still waiting when D’Nisha and Anthony return.
She looks toward the door.
D’NISHA
Shayla, I want to ask you something.
SHAYLA
What?
D’NISHA
What exactly is your relationship with Anthony?
Shayla looks toward Anthony.
Anthony remains silent.
SHAYLA
I’ve already told you.
D’NISHA
No. You haven’t.
D’NISHA
You’re comfortable enough to ask him for money.
So I want to know why.
SHAYLA
Because he’s the father of my child.
D’NISHA
And?
SHAYLA
And he can help me when I need something.
D’Nisha’s expression becomes colder.
D’NISHA
Help you with your child’s needs?
Shayla pauses.
SHAYLA
Yes.
D’NISHA
Or help you with your shopping?
Shayla looks away.

I don’t see why it matters to you.
D’NISHA
It matters because you’re asking my partner for money.
ANTHONY
D’Nisha, please.
D’NISHA
No, Anthony. I need to understand this.

The room becomes completely silent.
Shayla looks hurt while Anthony watches both women carefully.
SHAYLA
I’m not trying to take him away from you.
D’NISHA
Then don’t behave like you’re trying to.
SHAYLA
I’m only asking him for help.
D’NISHA
For shopping?
Shayla remains silent.

That’s not the same thing as asking for help with your child.
SHAYLA
You don’t understand our situation.

SCENE 4 — ANTHONY SETS THE BOUNDARY
Anthony steps between them and raises his hand,
trying to stop the argument.
ANTHONY
Enough. Both of you.
Both women look at him.
ANTHONY
Shayla, I will always take responsibility for my child.
