SHARRA’S ULTIMATUM — BROOKE THREATENS TO EXPOSE HER SECRET

INT. FAMILY LIVING ROOM – EVENING

The house is unusually quiet.

BROOKE sits on the edge of the couch, staring down at her phone.

A college acceptance message is open on the screen.

She reads it again.

Her expression is uncertain.

She looks excited for a moment, but the feeling quickly disappears.

The front door opens.

SHARRA walks inside.

She notices Brooke sitting alone.

Sharra immediately senses something is wrong.

She walks closer.

SHARRA

Why are you sitting here?

Brooke slowly looks up.

BROOKE

I’m just thinking.

Sharra folds her arms.

SHARRA

Thinking about what?

Brooke hesitates.

BROOKE

College.

Sharra’s expression changes.

SHARRA

College?

Brooke nods.

BROOKE

I don’t know if I want to go anymore.

Sharra stares at her in disbelief.

SHARRA

What do you mean you don’t know?

Brooke looks away.

BROOKE

I just don’t feel ready.

Sharra lets out a frustrated breath.

SHARRA

Not ready?

She takes a step closer.

SHARRA

Brooke, everybody has been talking about your college plans. Your family has been preparing for this. And now you’re saying you don’t want to go?

Brooke remains silent.

Sharra’s voice becomes sharper.

SHARRA

Do you even understand how ridiculous this sounds?

BROOKE

I’m allowed to be unsure.

SHARRA

No.

Sharra shakes her head.

SHARRA

You’re making excuses.

BROOKE

I’m not making excuses.

Sharra looks toward the doorway.

A few family members are nearby, quietly listening.

Sharra doesn’t lower her voice.

SHARRA

Then tell everyone why you’re refusing to go.

Brooke looks uncomfortable.

BROOKE

I don’t want to talk about this in front of everyone.

Sharra ignores her.

SHARRA

Why not?

She turns toward the others.

SHARRA

She has a college opportunity right in front of her, and she wants to throw it away.

Brooke slowly stands.

BROOKE

Sharra, stop.

But Sharra continues.

SHARRA

What are you afraid of, Brooke?

Brooke clenches her hands.

SHARRA

Are you afraid you won’t fit in?

Brooke doesn’t answer.

SHARRA

Or maybe you’re afraid you’re not ready to grow up.

Brooke’s eyes narrow.

BROOKE

I said stop.

Sharra shakes her head.

SHARRA

This is exactly the problem.

She points toward Brooke’s phone.

SHARRA

You keep running away whenever something becomes difficult.

Brooke takes a breath.

BROOKE

You don’t know what I’m dealing with.

SHARRA

I know enough.

Sharra looks at everyone around them.

SHARRA

And honestly, I’m embarrassed that you’re even considering giving up.

Brooke looks stunned.

The room becomes completely silent.

BROOKE

You’re embarrassed?

Sharra nods.

SHARRA

Yes.

Brooke looks around the room.

Everyone is watching.

She swallows her anger.

BROOKE

You really want to do this in front of everybody?

SHARRA

Maybe you need to hear the truth in front of everybody.

Brooke’s expression changes.

The hurt in her eyes turns into anger.

BROOKE

The truth?

SHARRA

Yes. The truth.

Brooke takes a slow breath.

BROOKE

Okay.

She steps closer.

BROOKE

Then let’s talk about the truth.

Sharra’s confidence suddenly fades.

SHARRA

What are you talking about?

Brooke looks directly at her.

BROOKE

You want to embarrass me in front of everyone?

Sharra remains silent.

BROOKE

Fine.

Brooke’s voice becomes calm, but firm.

BROOKE

But don’t forget something.

Sharra stares at her.

BROOKE

I know something about you.

The room becomes tense.

Sharra’s expression changes immediately.

SHARRA

Brooke…

BROOKE

No.

Brooke raises her hand slightly.

BROOKE

You wanted everybody to hear this conversation.

She looks around.

BROOKE

So maybe everybody should hear what I know too.

Sharra takes a nervous breath.

SHARRA

You wouldn’t.

Brooke gives her a serious look.

BROOKE

Don’t test me.

Silence fills the room.

Sharra’s anger disappears.

She suddenly looks worried.

SHARRA

You don’t understand what you’re saying.

BROOKE

I understand perfectly.

Brooke takes another step forward.

BROOKE

I know your secret.

Sharra looks around the room.

SHARRA

Brooke, please.

Brooke notices the sudden change in Sharra’s voice.

BROOKE

Interesting.

She pauses.

BROOKE

A few minutes ago, you weren’t worried about embarrassing me.

Sharra says nothing.

BROOKE

You were perfectly comfortable insulting me in front of everyone.

Brooke’s eyes remain locked on Sharra.

BROOKE

But now that I’m talking about your secret, suddenly you want me to stop.

Sharra looks down.

SHARRA

Just listen to me.

BROOKE

No.

Brooke’s voice shakes slightly with emotion.

BROOKE

You should have thought about that before humiliating me.

Sharra looks at her.

SHARRA

What do you want?

Brooke pauses.

BROOKE

I want you to stop treating me like I’m a child.

Sharra remains silent.

BROOKE

I can make my own decisions about college.

She looks toward the others.

BROOKE

Maybe I will go.

A beat.

BROOKE

Maybe I won’t.

She turns back to Sharra.

BROOKE

But that decision belongs to me.

Sharra slowly nods.

SHARRA

And what happens if I don’t agree?

Brooke’s expression becomes serious.

BROOKE

Then everyone finds out what you’ve been hiding.

Sharra’s eyes widen.

SHARRA

Brooke, don’t do this.

BROOKE

Then don’t push me.

Brooke picks up her phone.

She walks toward the hallway.

Sharra watches her leave.

SHARRA

Brooke!

Brooke stops but doesn’t turn around.

SHARRA

We need to talk.

Brooke slowly turns.

BROOKE

We can talk when you learn how to respect me.

Sharra has no response.

Brooke walks away.

The room remains silent.

Sharra stands frozen in the middle of the living room.

For the first time that evening, she realizes that Brooke isn’t afraid of her anymore.

And whatever secret Brooke knows could change everything.

FADE OUT.
