He sent Bethany a short message: “I know I hurt you. I’m sorry. I won’t stop trying to make things right.”

Outside, Bethany walked into the evening, glancing back at the house one last time before continuing on. Meanwhile, Larry grabbed his keys, determined not to let saying sorry be the end of the story. He knew now that actions — not just words — would have to prove that Bethany came first.
